Trooper Blaster Rifle vs Assault Cannon

At lvl 43 protoype(blue), the Assault Cannon does a max of 363 damage.

The Blaster rifle does 279 damage.

Doesnt this mean that Commando Troopers who use the Assault Cannon would do more damage than Vanguard dps Troopers who use the Blaster rifle?

I'm interested in this as I prefer the looks of the Blaster rifle over the Assault cannon but it seems the AC does more damage.

Thanks!

Vanguard abilities are made to compensate for the fact that their weapon does less min-max damage than the Assault Cannon. Commando however you will be losing a significant amount of damage if you pick a Blaster Rifle over an Assault Cannon as we are designed to use an Assault Cannon. Especially in 1.2 when full auto will be even more useful. If you are a DPS Commando and are interested in any kind of endgame group content, you will want to use an Assault Cannon if you don't want to hit enrage timers or get carried by the other dps.

At the moment assault vanguards are some of the highest dps in the game. They might even have the highest burst damage potential although that is getting toned down.

If you prefer the look of the vanguard's weapon then play a vanguard, although the playstyle is completely different.

Yeah vanguard is more of a melee class with some ranged capabilities but you'll want to play in melee while Commando is a traditional ranged class. I get where the OP is coming from, if I could use a Rifle without gimping myself on my Commando I would use it in a heartbeat as I hate the Assault Cannons, but it's just not possible without being a burden. It's actually the first thing I tested out in beta to see if it was viable.

as been said, it's just cosmetic ang gameplay difference, but not dps wise

number can be change, parameter can be adjusted, math can be tweak to do the same (or nearly the same) damage when play correctly, even with a toothpick.

i remember seeing the same concern for the warrior dps in WoW, how wielding 2 * 2h weapon would lead to so much more damage than 2 * 1h weapon. turns out, damage were roughly the same, just a cosmetic change.

however, commando with a rifle will indeed subpar dps than with an assault cannon.

My biggest problem with the Trooper is that they give the Commando the ability to use both the Cannon and the Rifle while limiting the Vanguard to only the Rifle.

It makes no sense to me when the Commando has the ability to be a Combat Medic while the Vanguard has the ability of being a Tank when choosing Sheld Specialist diciplie.

When I think Tank I think big gun and when I think Combat Medic I think lightly armoured carrying a SMG in order to be mobile enough to carry medical supplies around the battlefield.

So with that in mind why would a Combat Medic carry the game equivalent of a Minigun or M60.

Personally I think both subclasses should be allowed to use both the Rifle and the Cannon or if they don't want to do that, then switch the cannon usage to the Vanguard and the rifle to the Commando.

Speaking of Commando or Special Forces, most are made up of individuals who do specific jobs such as Team Medic, Scout, Heavy Weapons and Tech Specialist.

Note the roles of Team Medic and Heavy Weapons Specialist specifically and how they are two completely diifferent roles.

You just need to look at the original Havok Squad with Needles being the Team Medic, a relatively small Mirialan male and not a big muscular male who you'd normally seeing carrying a large weapon.
