I have noticed something, I probably ain't the only one:

Look at the flag of the Sith Empire in SWTOR.

Then look at the flag of the Galactic Empire and the Galactic Republic in the movies.

See how they are almost indentical, why would the Republic use a flag that looks almost the same as their old enemies?

Because the Devs want stuff to look like star wars. look at the old republic symbol in game and it looks an awful lot like the rebel alliance symbol.

I know of the jedi symbol your thinking of but if you think about it that too looks alot like the original rebel symbol you first see on the helmets of the xwing and y wing pilots in ANH.

Reference: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bendu

Basically, it's a symbol for unification. Not sure if the number of spokes symbolizes anything in particular, but let's pretend two of them stand for "peace" and "love", which would explain why the Sithier ones have six spokes instead of eight.

Spokes = branches of government
