I can't decide which character to play and was wondering if there is an obvious better character. And also could you point me to the best discipline to use please.

I'm still struggling with this question and I beta tested this game...

My suggestion is play both until one of them takes a lead with you personally.

Assassin has a leg up due to the sustained stealth and greater CC capabilities IMO.
I want my SWG...

Yeah, it kinda depends on your play style. Playing as a sin you want to be picking your fights, and not really rushing into the thick of things. Your "oh crap" button is to stealth out and run away. Although a sin also has a tank spec, so if you are interested at all in trying out tanking, that's a plus. If you go DPS sin you probably want deception (infiltration for shadow). Sins do hit hard now, but a lot of that is their set bonus (that's probably true with most specs - the set bonuses are pretty important now). Well, actually, their set bonus got nerfed recently, but I think they are still considered one of the top tier classes for arenas, and in 8v8 they have a lot of utility with stealth and cc's.

If you like to leap into the fray and break all the mezzes that sins set up, then play a mara! Ok, that's only 1/2 a joke. I know a lot less about how to play a mara, obviously, because I suck at it. But mara's do have (in my opinion) at least 2 "oh crap" combos. The have a 99% damage reduction for a short while that lets them stay in combat and keep dishing out damage. They also have a stealth-out and run - which is arguably worse than the sin one, because it doesn't take them out of combat. I found, in practice though, it was basically just as good if not better for a few reasons... One is that there are so many aoe abilities and dots and other things flying around that drag you back into combat, that the sin one leaves me in combat about 75% of the time anyway. And also the mara one is usually paired with predation, which lets the mara sprint half way (or all they way) across the map, and then they drop combat anyway and heal up. Spec-wise Im not sure. I always went fury, because I think it was supposed to be the easiest to learn, yet still be effective.

But like the post above says, give them a try. If you are on SF, then queue up for PvP in lowbies and mids. You will probably get mostly arenas, except you should get some 8v8's closer to "prime time" EST. Keep in mind though that your power relative to everyone else varies wildly in lows and mids, depending on what levels everyone is within the ranges. You will probably feel like a god as you get close to 42 (I think is the max lowbie level now), and then when you ding into mids it will suck again for a while.

Absolutely do not play any melee that does not have stealth. Range dps is so heavily favored right now that you will be miserable unless you constantly run with a premade. As a mara, you will be slowed the entire time you are in a WZ.
