However I got it working properly eventually, so I hope those issues are in the past now!

Then steam had it on sale and I just linked the "trial" account over to steam. I hate playing through steam, though, because I have frequent latency issues that aren't because of the game itself. If I go back to it, I'll have to check on how to bypass logging in through steam to get a better connection.
