«Rough edges» of SWTOR

Yea, I know, again with this, yea, a newcomer came here to whine (well, not exactly). I won’t be the first who started this topic, but the more I play this game the more I want to put my mind in order through talking about this game in forums. And yes - I suck at introductions. And probably at English.

KotFE revamped entire stuff, but with that it left a lot of rough edges in the old content. It is pretty hard to split this edges into the «section» cuz one comes from another, but I will try. I won’t teach you - Bioware - how to make this game or how to improve player’s experience, this is only a observation... Or maybe I will make some notes about improvement anyway, lol.

TL/DR: I think that current structure of the game - its core from the beginning - is the reason why you make decisions that create a massive poo storm in the community. The game itself is preventing you to create something new or better in the game.

In detail:

1). Class content

Class content was pain in the bottom for you, I know it. A brave decision to create 8 different games in one and make it KOTOR-convincing for players so they don’t get back to another game with “where is my KOTOR 3?” thing. You even encouraged people to lvl more toons and complete class stories with that Legacy system, Outfit Designer, Strongholds and other stuff, but it is clear now that you do not want to repeat that extreme experience once again, it was clear starting from SoR or even sooner. I understand why you abandoned other classes except the one player chose for KotFE. But you could make it smoother.

«Local» class stories or even lone class quests in SoR are much MUCH acceptable than Chosen One story you trying to implement in KotFE. Because KotFE feels alien, SWTOR is the game about cooperation, not competition between favorite class that will outlive others and other ones who will be thrown away. More about this - in the end of the post.

BTW how ALL the comps are alive and my toons are supposedly not? Some Revan-gone-alone-after-KOTOR stuff?

2). Side Content, functionality, basic activities, etc

Some examples that catches my eye:

  • Make Space Battles great again. Them things are like diskette in flash drive’s world. It would be at least something old-but-new to do between chapters or even KotFE seasons.
  • Make dailies great again. Heroics are winning in terms of gearing and currency.
  • Make GSF great again. That gosh darn drones.
  • Legacy window and unlocks need some epic revamp. Sending my comps to sell junk is... well... you know.
  • Fleets could use some new instances like Darvannis. Or at least a few more spawn points.
  • Some vendors have lost their purpose like Lightside/Darkside ones (in terms of the gearing), PvP vendors at the PvP-mission terminals (I used to buy some stuff on my way to max lvl because it was one of the best way to get new gear for low-mid lvl), social gear vendors. Thanks to heroics and easy gear.
  • Level sync on planets. At the same time we have epic droid for solo-fp and OP comps to compensate our time spent. Feels like mutual exclusion.
  • Some tokens (like legacy ones for toons that you get by completing class story chapters) became useless (but not for outfit designer). I do not even remember how they called .___.
  • From previous 2: heroics became #1(the first and the only one relevant) solution for getting new gear before KotFE.
  • Hangars became useless (not for the class missions, but for free roaming), because we have strongholds and legacy perks. Just like orbital stations.
  • Ships have a little purpose now and they are totally empty (no comps). It pains even more in KotFE chapters, when you just teleporting to the planet.
  • Conquests are still alien for me (again SWTOR is about cooperation, not competition). And pointless (no reward).
  • Advanced classes trainers and quests are useless. Only for XP, not for RP and class progression.
  • Assembling of matrix shards is relevant for 55 lvl, but not for current cap.
  • Taxi could easily kill side content, because you can just skip quests by traveling between taxi stations in different order.
  • No new hairstyles/tatoos/other oprions for zabraks and some other aliens.
  • Still can’t preview the item from guild bank.
  • Can’t preview weapon sound effect in the preview window.
  • To «improve» my Alliance I need go back in time to farm some Cold War heroics, then give the crates to specialists or recruits in my current timeline. Mind blown.
  • and a lot of other little things...

You know what to do. I think.

3). Rewards

This game was always about RP and RP is really hard to reward in MMO. Especially in MMO, because this genre is slow and risky for some radical improvement. You do not know how to reward players. And I don’t blame you because I don’t know what should I get to feel rewarded for my efforts in this game. You do not have new instruments to encourage people to do new shuff (but you certainly know how can create new activities tho) because it could lead to reworking an entire core of the game. That’s why you are trying to do new almost radical stuff like KotFE by leaving almost everything old behind. I get it, but do not approve it.

4). It is not only about WHAT you presenting, it is also about HOW you do it.

Some changes in community management required, especially after E3 with all that rumors about new Blur CGI and etc. I was actually surprised that the biggest SW game so far was not properly presented with new stuff in the biggest game expo. Even in Twitter.

About new event - looks like Diablo 3's seasons to me, but with all... SWTOR-ness in it. Nothing more - nothing less, so I a m pretty neutral about it. But ofcourse at first i butthurted like everyone did. Guess that is the fan thing. Thanks to my laziness I have only 1 Legendary Legacy on Red Eclipse with 3 KotFE toons and 5 non-KotFE 60s, and I recently create a new one on Ebon Hawk with only 30 lvl Sith-marr and bunch of 1 lvl toons. About bloody time :D

5). I do not want to talk about f2p and Cartel Market because it is pointless. But mixing the idea of the new content and features and how to make profit from it in the way you did last 4-5 months - well, desperate times call for desperate measures, I suppose.

I like KotFE because it brought changes, but it is necessary to soft «rough edges» in the old content and old core to make the whole thing relevant. Because from the look of the current state of the game and situation on forums - “rework one thing at the time” is not working anymore. It is hard to do things that were created long time ago with some tensions and other unpleasant stuff and change them when needed in time, but this is where we - players - are. Well, at least me. We are right In the middle of unknowning about the past and the future - and your attempts to please new players and please old ones with uncertainty in actions you perform to achieve both goals - it is not helping.

I hope you, guys, will surprise us in this fall (in a good way).
