For [Pete's] sake, BioWare won't even let friends /friend each other on their differently-aligned characters. Did they really think there would be no players who liked Boba Fett *and* Jedi, for example?

I support this if only as a step towards righting such a bone-headed dumb decision to prevent friends from communicating and knowing each is online in-game. And don't limit to just RPers, at least not the opt-in aspects.
Do you support a Mac client for SWTOR?
BioWare Founders do! (once they get "everything stabilized and happy.")
"[Mac OS users] are an important and large audience. And we want to serve that audience."

Before you ask for something, check if it is in the game.
And how does that help me if I want to ask my friend who's playing his level 10 alt on Korriban if he wants to switch to his level 15 alt on Coruscant to help me with a heroic mission?

I support this idea/thread! It feels quite strange not to be able to talk to one another.

I'm for this. Please stop limiting the game for the sake of the PVP crowd.

They could always just allow conditional whispers across the factions, like say, I'm a Jedi and I add a Bounty Hunter's name to my friend list, and they add my name to their list, and only then can we exchange tells/whispers, the moment one unfriends the other, sending tells becomes impossible again, should prevent griefing quite nicely.

My first thought was.... for the sake of RP servers, please no. It might happen that numerous people will start their alts there just because of this option. Not because of the RP servers as such.

But in general, I agree with allowing cross-faction communication. In fact I am kind of surprised it isn't there already. I thought.... the Empire and the Republic always understood each other?

Gonna chime in here. At the very least, a restriction to limit communication cross-faction is only going to hurt the social factor of the game when you have friends not being able to talk to friends.

So make cross-faction communication "disabled" by default. Include a warning. Anyone who still chooses to switch it on will know full well the risk he's taking. Or at least allow accounts to whitelist each other.

Harassment is going to happen anyplace so using that excuse doesn't work.

It works perfectly fine in EQ2. Cross faction chat on all but our PvP server.

Besides, you DO have an /ignore function you know. Being on Antonia Bayle (the RP server of EQ) you learn who are trolls and ignore them. Saves sanity and blood pressure.

I'd love to have cross faction chat. Makes planning things simpler and easier.

Yes, but please make it a user preference. I.e. a check-box in the game settings that says something like "Allow cross faction tells" and "Allow joining cross faction custom chat channels." That would be very very cool, and it would ensure that if you didn't want harassment that might come from it, you could opt out.
