why the SWG NGE and SWTOR KotFE comparisons for?

Certain people love to cause chaos and troll wherever they go. Start pointless flame wars for no good reason. Some people want discussion so much, they would take bad discussion even if it's horrible to just discuss and get their thoughts out.

Knights of the Fallen Empire is NOTHING LIKE NGE at all! It's improving upon current things, not taking away, streamlining things, not sabotaging them, and it's not messing with any classes or changing the WHOLE core of the game. So I don't know where it came from either.

The closest thing that can be considered NGE for an mmorpg would be Firefall's version. That game was AMAZING before they went and wowified it. It was very complex and rich before they added levels, jobs and stuff like that. They took away from the core systems. That's the only thing I could see that is even near NGE type level.

NGE was it's own mega screw up though.

KotFE is NOTHING LIKE NGE. It's just people rustling jimmies.

On topic, the next expansion is a mini reboot to cash in on Episode 7 before the game may get shut down next year. They will be 9 1/2 years into a 10 year licence (including development time) and there's been no talk of a renewal or extension. I am guessing the expansions success or lack therefore will determine if it is renewed.
Why are you talking out the place where the sun don't shine DM :eek

"This game is going nowhere" - 2010
" the game may get shut down next year" - 2011
" the game may get shut down next year" - 2012
" the game may get shut down next year" - 2013
" the game may get shut down next year" - 2014
" the game may get shut down next year" - 2015

That's what I have seen from some people every single year Their "predictions" of the game shutting down for...whatever reason? Yes, they are going to shut down a thing that is bringing them mega millions of dollars a year and will continue to do so for a very, very long time. EA had to see for couple of years if SWTOR was going to stay afloat. And it did and keeps growing slowly and steady. So now they are 100 percent behind it, probably from seeing the demographics over the years and now went all in and are staying with TOR.

And yes, it will coincide with things because of Episode 7. But SWTOR will remain it's own "thing" in Star Wars. It's THE era for way back. So people who are interested can go back and see. Remember, the old republic era is "sort of sort of not" canon but most likely will remain so until Disney says it's not because they KNOW what they have here. Rich, rich stories that will never, ever effect the Clone Wars, Prequel Trilogy, Original Trilogy or the New Trilogy. So this game is going to be around for a long, long time because it is the events of what happened in the past, in The Old Republic era that will be here if people are interested in it. It's very good stuff.

So don't spread that "game may shutdown stuff" that's not right at all. I can assure you of that.

None of that precludes EA from creating games on any of those platforms - it only allows Disney to do so as well without affecting their agreement with EA. As part of that exclusivity part, EA does not need to renew the license for SWTOR; once the deal was signed, they automatically had the rights to the IP for the length of the deal, therefore the license does not need to be renewed until the agreement does - in 2023.
Quoted again - Now. that egg, go and suck on it AGAIN
According to the announcement, EA "will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories."

A fan boy will only see what they want to see despite what is actually infront of them. I've highlighted the key parts.

This means that EA do not have exclusive rights for mobile, social (which MMOs can be) and online - which MMOs are 100%. That clear enough for you? Whilst EA probably can develop for these platforms, Disney and whoever they choose have first call.

And the game almost did shut down in 2011 (game wasn't released in 2010 - FYI), then rode in the F2P model to save the day.

It just seems odd that 9.5 years into a 10 year deal, and theres no word of the future. The current content drought and little effort by the devs of late (hardly any server down times now, no regular fixes, hell even the Cartel Crap packs stay the same for a longer period) . Nothing is certain but if I was a betting man, I'd bet money on the future depending if the expansion and the movies draws in the numbers to boost the current drop.

NGE was a total game changer for SWG. Essentially it took 34 classes and spat out just 9. Turned the game into a very bad WoW clone. However, the game world itself remained. But how you looked at your character(they removed all 3d movement/rotation and opted for an 'over the shoulder' view) and it was utter dog crap.

The last remaining loyal players left. Things did improve over time and many features returned and SWG lasted 8 years as a paid to play game - didn't go F2P either. So despite its many many bumps, it lasted.

With the expansion coming, it appears that everything we currently know within the game will change/go become 'legacy'. If you look at the SWTOR trailers, its littered with hints about companions, classes and much more. So in the latest trailer, with Korriban and Tython destroyed, although they probably can still be visited, it will look different.

I thinking comparing this to WoWs cataclysm is probably the closest. Of course no one knows for sure but with the game suffering in terms of numbers, people finding it hard to get groups, its an easy way for Bioware to remove Faction content, bring in solo stuff and reduce development costs.

Again, its just guess work but do expect the expansions to radically change the game.

This. Because people equate the NGE with impending doomage.
It's "elder game", guys. The day this game gets an actual "endgame" is when BW pulls the plug on the servers. MMORPGs don't have an "end".

Just people wanting to stir up drama, or don't read the info, or read far to much into things.
1.1 and 1.2 and maybe 1.4 were all NGEs as well. Community-NSA was a poster that started one of the NGE threads here and he spent most of the thread adding disclaimers to it..

I think the closest we've had to all these descriptions of NGE (I was playing Runescape and Neopets at the time, so, yeah, I'm real knowing of all this), was 3.0 when the skill trees were dropped and replaced with disciplines and then those Hybrid Builds were killed (amusingly enough, hybrids were apparently never intended for this game, and were causing issues with balancing so healers and tanks didn't get to their useful rotation-wise skills until Act 3).

But mostly, comparisons are being made for drama and likely over-speculation. Like a big conspiracy theory that doesn't make sense without large leaps of ... Intuition/faith. Like Hitler made a deal with the Master from Doctor Who to be immune to any and all attempts to travel through time and kill him. That's a conspiracy theory on the same kind of scale as the KotFE=TOR'sNGE.
