Can a certain amount of people just please stop bringing this up? There's not going to be a new engine. This is what we are going to have. BioWare's version of the heroengine that will keep getting added to and the kinks ironed out so more can go into the game.

Darn! Can people just please stop with this obsession about game engines? I'm so very much sick of this We have HeroEngine. That's what we are going to have.

Also, unless you are employed by BioWare or told by Eric Musco, you don't speak for the community. You don't need to point out the obvious "a happy community = a prosperous game". Stop acting like you are some community moderator that can decide for people what they like and don't like and get all happy when you create controversey or drama. Just stop LNF. Just stop already please.

BTW, I'm a huge supporter of HeroEngine and love it.

Dark Age of Camelot - Warhammer - SWTOR
Developer:
MYTHIC - EA MYTHIC - EA MYTHIC

According to the ESO devs shortly before launch they said they only used the Hero Engine for early prototypes, before their own Engine, which they were writing internally, was far enough along.

As I said, I am almost 99.99% sure there is a HeroEngine logo when the game starts (but then, I haven't played since its first week, the game bored me so much).
And sure, they do not use "HeroEngine", just like SWTOR is not using "HeroEngine", meaning that it is not a pure heroegine, they are both using their own variations of it, refined by their own software engineers. It is just that ZeniMax made their modiifcation from a much more finished and stabilized version of it, unlike BioWare, who started with an unfinished mess.

Never gonna happen.

Frankly, I think the game runs pretty well and the environments are very shiny! Granted, I don't really play ops or pvp which I think is where most of the complaints come from, but, I've never had any problems on fleet or in flashpoints.

I guess you haven't tried the Walker boss on Yavin that requires 20+ people, all casting and with effects flying left and right. Even a very powerful rig starts having issues a bit into the fight.

However, allowing a setting to disable/reduce particle effects would solve it.

Yes there is, but it's possible that was only placed there because it was used in development, not because it's actually used now. And I believe it's only on initial installation. Subsequent startup splash screens lack the logo.

They've outright stated multiple times they used it in the beginning for prototyping, but do not use it in the final game. They were using it until they could get their own engine up and running, so that they weren't needlessly blocked until they could work in their own engine.

You misunderstand.

Bioware purchased a development license to the Hero engine so that they could add, update, rewrite, or remove code as they saw fit. The point is to bootstrap development so that you don't have to do all the coding yourself. It's faster and more cost effective if you have the staff to complete it and pick a codebase that is already close to what you want.

Loads of companies do this.

This was the plan from the very start. Bioware had no desire to keep compatibility with Hero, because the Hero engine at the time (and still today) could not do what they needed it to do for the game. Remember the server issue and the conversion to mega servers? That was held back by Hero engine code that couldn't scale. The fix was to rewrite that code so they could build the megaservers.

The engine design does act as a restraint for many things that SWTOR devs and players might want. But that's true of every game engine. Is SWTORs more restrictive? That's for the devs to decide, but in the end I think we'll end up with a cost-vs-features argument. Since so many people here complain about how much the game costs, I think its a bit contradictory to also complain that the devs took an approach that reduces costs for them.
