look they could make SWTOR use mega servers.. there is no tech reason they couldn't.. all they would do is shard the servers like they already do.

They could even do a pve mega, pvp mega and a rp mega server clusters.

The issue is cost or redoing there server clusters and PR issue of name's that players already have on there server. They could go with a @handle system that some games have but that would kinda ruin immersion.

There is no tech reason they couldn't though.

That would be fine with me but I predict an epic backlash from many. They should really change the way names have to be so unique before the merge so that people don't have to change them at all.

Some people payed to get exclusive naming benefits. Only fair they get to keep their names. So yes, I would support that.

Anyway, I too am convinced that "better than cross server" will definitely come soon and that it will be totally awesome.

Regardless, I'm fairly sure they would do megaserver if they could, but I don't think it's in the cards right now. They already planned and announced just pvp cross server years ago, and then simply failed at implementing it, and that was shortly after release with a full team. Nowadays, all ot those who originally made their server tech are probably fired already and the current team most likely would be even less able to do it if they tried.
I don't think the legacy system would help as much as you think. At launch legacy names were unique, if that were still the case it would be more helpful than it is now. I know entire guilds who all are using the same legacy name now. Combining the two names with an @ would cut down on the likelihood of conflicts, but wouldn't eliminate them. One way to guarantee unique names with an @ system would be to use current server name. Example Revaniscool@POT5. This would guarantee the name is unique since there can't be 2 players with the same character name on that server currently. The complexity there would be that people can have characters on multiple servers so you might several different @server linked to various characters. Also you'd have the problems of new players, you'd either have to assign them a random server or come of with something different for any new characters (even for existing players) which makes this not compelling either.

Best solution would be to make it @account as listed about because that is guaranteed 100% unique because that's the account you log into the game with. I would think they might have concerns about that display name being shown everywhere for security, but 99% of forum users their display name is the forum name so that negates that argument somewhat. That would be the best option to preserve names IMO.

Legacy names would have worked nicely if they were unique and they were unique across all servers but that's never been the case and would make creating them extremely difficult currently with how many account have been created in the history of game.

Considering the scaling already makes the game grind to a halt when you have more than 2 or 3 instances of a planet up I dont see this happening.
