I don't know if this has been linked but here ya go: EA at Gamescom.

Edit: The 1 mil figure comes near the end, it is not long so watch the whole thing.

Check your sarcasm meter, I think it needs re calibrating.

EA actually has hope for this game again. SWTOR 3.0 the new hope.
There is only the force.

I don't think that indicates that the game is failing, but it does indicate IMO that it has stalled a bit from just before GSF, and I would hazard a guess (just a guess mind you) that the poor reception of GSF IMO had an impact on total players.

So I would say that the total players have deflated a bit, but Strongholds might bring some of those folks back....though I fear we will lose them as well when folks discover the features limitations.

However, I expect the game to remain healthy for a long time. I just don't expect it to knock any doors down anytime soon.

I was being sarcastic!
Anyway! While the number might not indicate that the game is failing or succeeding, it certainly indicates that at the current state the game is in a healthy position.

It is definitely a good sign that they feel confident to show off SWTOR at their press conferences again, and even mention the number of players. Keep in mind that the fate of SWTOR is completely dependent on EA, they can decide when it's time to shut down the servers. There have definitely times during the past two years where I shivered what EA thought of SWTOR, especially during the F2P transition when they stopped talking about SWTOR in their financial reports.
Now, it is definitely looking like SWTOR is going strong again. Unfortunately, they didn't say how many people are subscribed, but I guess that there are so many people spending money on Cartel Coins that you can't measure SWTOR just based on the subscribers.

Also, all the raiders and rated PvPers feeling let down by no content or bad S2 rewards won't have too big of an impact on the game population, they just are the loudest on the forums. A majority of the players hasn't yet seen all of the operations, if they have been in one at all, so those players will definitely have more than enough content to keep them playing until at least 3.0, when I'm pretty sure that many endgame people will return to the game.

Your fears may be unfounded for the most part, since you apparently assume everyone will interpret them as being "limitations".

I very much doubt that.
