Upkeep cost to maintain strongholds? Nope but if you deactivate/retire a stronghold, it will cost you to reactivate it if you bought it with credits. If you bought it with cartel coins there is no reactivation fee.

Now I've asked in the sticky thread above and during the last livestream but either they just keep missing the question or are unwilling to answer it but really I think with this starting in about a month's time it's not an unfair question to ask.

Why would anyone retire a stronghold?

The reason I ask the question is because there is a distinction made between buying the stronghold with credits in game or with cartel coins. Now if there is no maintenance cost, I don't actually see a reason why anyone would deactivate it. There just is no need for a player to have that option if it makes no difference to you.

So I have to wonder...is stronghold retirment actually an option or is it something that simply happens under certain circumstances? There has to be something, why else make a difference between a credit and a cc purchase...

And with that, it just sounds like something that more or less might make people feel forced to buy it with cc in order to avoid any possible negative effects. This is not a nice idea for someone who is subbed either.

So really when you put together that there is no apparent maintenance cost, then why would there be a retirement of a stronghold and more importanly a reactivation fee and yes, why the difference between credit and cc purchases?
Hey Tsillah!

This is a great question. The reason that there is an option to deactivate a stronghold is that when strongholds goes live, there will be a limit of 4 strongholds per legacy. I know what you are thinking, there are only 4 strongholds right now and you would be correct. However, if and when we introduce any strongholds in the future, you would need to deactivate a stronghold (assuming you own all 4) in order to purchase a new one. That is the only circumstance that you would need or likely want to deactivate a stronghold.

Hopefully that answers your question!

Notice the keyword If guys. Some people like to jump on statements like this as if this is a guarantee there are more strongholds in the future.

Question tho Eric, so would an option to buy another Stronghold slot via CC to extend how many you can hold by 5, 6, etc in the future be out of the question if you guys were to bring more strongholds ? Just curious.

Just wondering, any plans of making the limit larger, or disable it completely, as another bonus for subscribers?

I would imagine the dev team has ideas for more strongholds, but they need to see how popular the current ones will be before committing resources to making more.

Just like GSF, it is up to the players, via actual playtime, to show the devs what they want.

If new ones come out, I would imagine that you'd have CC unlocks for that.

Subs get 12 toon slots, but you can buy 10 unlocks to get to 22, as an example.

Naturally there will be CC slot unlocks, but I think that subs should get larger or no limits on strongholds, just like we do on characters, compared to F2P/Preferred

It's important to properly set expectations. Leave the door open for future expansion, but don't promise anything in case this falls on its face or they have more important projects to work on.

I think that's a technical question that they might not be able to answer yet.
They seemed unsure on how many one could own max when doing the stream and I think the number settled upon (4) is pretty arbitrary.
IF it's possible to have more than 4 active at the same time, I think they'll sell unlocks (just like they do with character slots, so you could buy them for CC or buy them off the GTN).
But if it's not possible, then I think that this is a decent workaround. That way, someone who paid actual money for a stronghold won't ever have to pay to reactivate it. And that sounds fair to me.

So, what you're saying is that we can have more than 4 Strongholds...but we can only have 4 'active' Strongholds at one time.

So, for people like myself with 8 chars, I can actually 'have' a Stronghold for each of them, but only 4 of them can be active at one time.

This is....a really great bit of information for me. Thank you.
