Arena is hardly serious pvp is always about the FoTM comp and very rarely about anything else.

RvR is pretty much dead War was the last attempt to make an RvR game and it fell way short of bringing that style of pvp back. Players are unwilling to play the losing side of a zerg, and Devs are not willing to put the effort in to solve that problem. The best you can hope for is a simple playground filled with daily quests and hope that people care enough about the rewards every day to show up.

If it will be random as all others, sure.

RvR was not the problem with WAR. The failures of that game had to do with a bunch of other things that had nothing to do with RvR itself. The same theory you tried to apply to RvR works for arena. If you're not a FoTM class or part of the FoTM comp, then g t f o.

What do you guys mean "correctly", just make a que option for 3 v 3 people join into an empty area, maybe some poles for LOS then they fight... It is really hard to do arena incorrectly.

TBH I think most devs stay away from arena for the simple and obvious fact that it requires classes to absurdly balanced. A whole different level of balance needed compared to warzones or any objective based pvp and in a game where PvE is the primary focus that type of pvp balance wont happen.

The important thing is what happens after you implement arena ... you have to balance for PvE, raid vs raid PvP and 3v3 ... it ends badly.

I think the two major concerns against arenas are:

1. Exclusive gear that is only attainable to the best arena teams.
Yes, getting pvp gear is a bit of a grind, but that's pretty much what mmos are. Arena players want gear based on skill (it's debatable if arena play is skill, or just learning the best class 'tricks'), but a lot of people do not and would be upset if there was unattainable gear that only the arena players could get. Especially if the gear is better than normal pvp gear and it lets people just faceroll through bgs.

Solution: Orange gear rewards for arena ranks. Orange gear is in the game only for looks, and it doesn't have any advantage over any other orange gear, since stats are based off of its mod slots. Arena snobs would still have their rewards, but you get rolled by one of them in normal pvp, you know it is because of their skill, and not their gear.
2. Game devs attempting to balance classes for arena play.
2v2 and 4v4 arena balance != PvE balance. People are concerned that Bioware will mess with their talent trees to fix the never ending OP pvp classes. But this is something that Bioware has been pretty firm on, that PVE is their main concern. Balancing pvp should be a lot simpler in TOR though, since there are really only 4 classes and 8 advanced classes.
Personally, I want arenas. I don't care about the ranks or the gears. I just like pvp and I like variety. We need more huttball maps, more different BGs, good open world pvp, etc. No mmo is going to be successful will out good pvp. I hope Bioware understands this and is working on things as we speak.

The comment about arena is a half truth. Almost any comp can be competitive to a point. While sure you won't have triple dps claiming glad titles across every Bg there are still some very viable oddball 2k+ teams out there.

The issues with RvR are not as simple as class balance. The biggest problem is fixing the issue with zerging. If there is only one objective then the smaller faction won't participate, and if there are 2 then the smaller faction will avoid the larger faction to claim the one objective the larger faction is not around. Warhammer turned into 2 groups circling around maps PVE'ing with the random fight every so often before the zone locked and everyone went back to warfronts. If they did something like wow did with their open pvp then you're going to have times where some people won't be able to play because the population cap was reached, or you will have people split unable to play with their guilds. There is just no easy solution to making good RvR. Zerging is just 1 problem with RvR just 1.

You don't need more ... you need few good ones. LoL for example has 2 maps for PvP and it does not need more. More maps = pugs won't be able to develop good strategies. In WoW it's one big mess. Ppl have no idea how to play what map, because there are bazilion of them.

One thing that catches my eye in this thread is all of the "If you cant get to 2.2k rating etc etc you suck bla bla bla".

I played WoW for years on end like most people, I was Grand Marshall in vanilla, and ive completed every BG achivement there is in that stupid game but I only competed in season 1 arena. Why?

Because Arena destroyed the pvp in WoW. When blizzard decided to make Arena the way to get the best pvp gear and if you didnt, you were a scrub and worth nothing to anyone else.

I HATE the fact that people judge you for what color your gear has, for what "rating" your team have and what you achived the previous arena season.

I'm for an arena system in SW:TOR, if its introduced correctly and not making it mandatory for the pvp end game gear like blizzard did.

Some people enjoy arenas, some enjoy battlegrounds/warzones. The gear between these 2 shouldnt differ.. Those that enjoy arenas will still be better at it then those that enjoy warzones and vice versa but the gear should still remain the same.
