Actually, for the past week, /say hasnt been working. You type and its hit or miss if it actually shows up in the chat box. Last few days its been zero percent chance of /say working at all. Seeing as this doesn't seem to be a priority of any kind for them to fix it for us to even be -able- to chat, bubbles are probably a pipe dream.

Plenty of games do it already. PSO2 , Lineage II, Aion for just a few examples of this system working not only perfectly but fittingly for the atmosphere.

Irrelevant. You don't need to be a game designer or a programmer to know how things should perform. I.E. You or anyone else playing the game.

Edit:

People saying that "It's not needed." that's the exact same argument as me saying "It's needed." You provide no greater evidence other than "It caused lag." Okay, so make it stop causing lag.
"Well I don't like it, looks stupid"
Well I like it, I CAN TELL WHOSE talking and makes more sense visually, and it doesn't look stupid.

At no point in time did I say your opinions are invalid, but it seems you are all jumping down my throat trying to say mine are with no other validation other than mob mentality. Get a hold of yourselves.

In several words, chat bubbles are the worst thing that could happen to this specific game. They were in beta and caused performance issues. The game already has more than enough things contributing to lag on the fleet, the last thing we need is another. Plus, if the chat bubbles were not optional I believe many people including myself would leave the game as it creates a childish cartoon like environment and breaks all immersion.
Sorry, this game is already Childish and cartoon like. Chat bubbles wouldn't do much to change that.

As James T. told Hikaru: The word... is "no".

I do want them to make it happen tho. Mainly because because that would mean they'd patch the damn engine into a state in which it can handle more than 24 people in action at a time, paving way to larger warzones or open world pvp activities that don't turn the game into a slideshow.

so make it stop causing lag? thats your big solution? If it were so simple then we would have it by now, but it is not here is it?

Meanwhile thanks for confirming that you have no knowledge of the game engine or anything, to be fair neither do I other than we are using a heavily modified hero engine (I think its modified out of the alpha version I know that what this game was made with was not the finished product, point is one of its main defects at times is lag), but yet again I am not the one claiming that this is completely possible and should be done above all else because "you don't need to be a game designer or a programmer to know how things should perform".

Please quote me where I said chat bubbles should be done asap and above all issues.

Also please tell me how it's my fault that the company chose an engine they couldn't program correctly to handle a CHAT FEATURE, let alone half of the features they wanted to actually put into the game.

As much as I'd love to have toggle-able Chat Bubbles, it is never going to happen in this game. Not ever -- not in 10,000 years. So you need to accept that fact (as I reluctantly have) or you need to find yourself another MMO.

I also love how everyone is taking my inquiry as "No chat bubbles? I HATE YOU SWTOR." You guys that hard up for an argument?

I already play other MMO's I came back to SWTOR because a friend wanted to play and I wanted to show him around to help him out.

I had EXTREME DIFFICULTY communicating with him because he did not notice my attempts at communicating with him. I had to call him on the phone and tell him to look at the chat box. He doesn't play MMO's like I do and it frustrated him. He hasn't played since. This spurred forth my question, as I find it easier to communicate and see text when people have chat bubbles within my proximity, as I attempted to talk to someone earlier today and it took them 35 minutes (and 4 deaths, theirs not mine) to notice I was trying to talk to them.

its not your fault. I am just telling you that A: its been tried but did not work and B: its not practical nor even close to easy to fix, if it was easy then we would already have chat bubbles. I honestly would be fine with them if I could have an option to turn them off and see the messages in my regular chat window, but clearly chat bubbles ain't coming, and it will not be really possible to see them in the future at this point in time, especially given the engine.

The devs have gone on record to say back in beta they did in fact have chat bubbles but it was causing performance issues so they removed it from the live game. Also, considering you have been away a while and not a programmer you are not in position to say our opinions are invalid on anything. So it is in fact YOU who should get a hold of yourself.

Oh and childish and cartoonlike? You really do not know SW do you? Go and play Wildstar and come back and tell me SWTOR is childlike.
