I grew up watching OVA anime so the idea of taking a well known IP and completely rewriting it is not shocking. It is a fictional universe that can easily be rewritten for our enjoyment. We can do this with real history, why not fictional history?

Stories regarded as based on historical facts but which its up to you to decide whether true or not. Like the legend of King Arthur, and the "legend" that Jesus was the Son of God as opposed to just a carpenter. The rest is gospel, absolute truth. It definitely happened and there is no disputing that. Retcons in this case are now where the facts trump the fictional elements of those legends.
