Is one mega server for the whole game possible? I would love that

honestly what is the point of a megaserver when instances are capped at 170ish players?
I am pretty sure the game engine would crap the bed if it was raised

I should say that the idea of a megaserver isn't a bad idea. But only if that is what the game was using from the very beginning. SWTOR had a lot of servers at launch because they were predicting and hoping for a lot of subscribers and players. And at the beginning they were right. But when SWTOR didn't start off with EVERYTHING that WoW had built up over 7yrs of development and testing, then the population quickly dropped and resulted in a lot of servers being merged to save on maintenance and costs.

One of the big things with a Megaserver is having a Stable, well built system to sustain that level of dataflow. To try and merge everything into a single megaserver for SWTOR would be a disaster, because of not only the RP crowd, but people with the same name across multiple servers. There would be easily tens of thousands of names requiring changes in the event of another server merge, let alone the transfer to a megaserver.

A megaserver works for ESO because that's what they planned on and worked with, so everyone goes in knowing the name you want might not be available so players will be made to be a bit more creative in the creation and naming of their characters. It won't work for SWTOR because of the different crowds and all of them with very similar character names, as well as Guild Names. There would be too many issues to try and plug everything into a megaserver now than it would've been had they planned for it at launch.

As it sands, there are a number of servers that explicitly cater to PvP crowds and others to pure RP folk. To put them all into once would cause a lot of issues between players. Some servers only have lite PvP crowds, so for them to be thrown in with the Hardcore PvP'ers, would cause a lot of people grief and many of them would become so upset as to stop PvP or even quit the game altogether out of anger for having their needs ignored.

So my feeling on a megaserver is that it's not a bad idea for other games, but for those like SWTOR that began with multiple servers, it would make far too many people upset and would be too great an endeavor for the BioWare team to put effort into doing when they could spend that time and resources improving on other elements of the game.

They probably will do this sooner or later , GW2 is following ESO.

One thing ive never understood about these types of mmos, wow, rift, swtor. Is why they even have server types? they all have instances, why don't they just have Rp and pvp instances? then anyone could pvp whenever they felt like it no matter what server they are on.

That's a cool idea. Maybe it is something technically impossible. But a cool idea, nonetheless.

I would like to be able to switch instances if I wanted to PvP sometimes in the open world without having to be on a dedicated PvP server.

Especially with all the alts many of us have rolled, it's impossible to transfer a legacy to a different server type. I didn't know I'd prefer this in January 2012, but I wish I was on a RP-PVE server. I bet it would be more mature.

Could be wrong about that, though...

You guys can go and combine PvP and PvE servers together all you want, watch the two rage at each other.

But leave our RP servers alone. I'd like to peacefully RP without PvP/PvE trolls coming around to interrupt everything.

The idea is to have RP/PvP and PvE on their own instances. So basically everything stays the same. We either need a large servers merge or cross server ques.

Its not technically impossible, but its not money EA would be willing to give to setup the servers to work as such.

The thing is ESO and GW2 have a clear separation on PvE and PvP zones, SWTOR has not (which is why I prefer to play SWTOR, because I like playing on PvP servers) and thus a mega server that would bring PvE and PvP players together will, no matter how you do it, leave one group unsatisfied or even outright angry and no idea I ever heard how to solve that issue sounded good to me.

When you log in, your character will be placed at teh server location nearest to you to ensure the fastest connection, however you will be able to link up with people from anywhere, or jump to htier version . I know ESO are using the one mega server approach, and i know that these current servers are a merger of the old ones, if they can consolidate all those old realms into our current serveres, is it not possible to consolidate all our current realms into one?

I can imagine my latency will drop significantly if i kept connected to realms on actual servers that were near me, I am slmost salivating low latency and the 200-300 dps gain that will give me. You may wonder why I don't transfer all my toons to a server that is near my physical location.. well, i have 10 toons to do so, iwhich i can't really afford to send over + got my guilds and all my riends on this one. Now with a mega server, that would be no worry, i doubt i would know exactly the location my toon was running from but i woldn't carel

Kiss no ranked arena/warzones or no group finder queue pops in the morning which happens to e the only time you can play because of work or life committments goodbye, you'd be be able to do your ranked arenas/warzones and any group activity and always have a group ready. Is it 4:00 a.m. in your country or timezone? now you want to start a DF HM - no longer is it a ghost town cos everyone is aselep or tired, you'd have some people its prime time or for some people just back from school Wouldn't it be awesome
