SWTOR Support finally acknowledges there is an issue with the website log in: https://twitter.com/SWTOR/status/435820661974396928
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of fanboys suddenly cried out in anger and were suddenly silenced. I fear something really stupid has happened.

So although this is a welcomed change, It is still super lackluster! I mean, they couldn't respond on their own forums? Even if they had said the same thing here I think that would have had everyone a little less disgruntled about the lack of response.

Man.. how much longer is this going to take, i was lucky enough to sub 2 days ago, but when i went to transfer a character/ buy cartel coins.. i get the endless loading screen...

any idea of what a plausible cause may be?

A DNS problem, or the like, on their end. Based on other posts it seems the people who are having problems are being given bad addresses to the site. They must of changed the servers that the account management are on, or they got new IPs for some odd reason if the servers weren't changed. So the people with the problems are being sent to the old IP.

From what I've gathered from reading other posts anyway.

I still think the problem lies with akamai rather than bioware directly.

Akamai Technologies wikipedia page. They mirror the swtor accounts website on various servers closer to you. Some of those mirrors are broken.

Various NSlookups for account.swtor.com over the last several days:

23.46.43.8
23.46.43.8
23.209.219.8
23.51.59.8
23.64.107.8
23.195.107.8
23.209.219.8

Some of these are duplicates. I use my ISP's DNS, google's public DNS or 208.67.222.222, which is one of opendns 's public servers. Yesterday, google was giving me a different address to today - one that didnt work.
I was initially able to log in to the site by using a USA based VPN tunnel rather than any DNS changes.

Changing your DNS would be preferable to changing the hosts file. Once this is all fixed, you'd actually want the closest server to be the one replying!

My in-game ticket on this was closed with fairly useless suggestions that I'd broken something my end.

Agreed, those IPs belong to - United States Cambridge Akamai Technologies Inc.

I knew the main forums was Akamai, looks like the account side is as well

I started having this issue too. Cannot log in from home, either via IE 11 or via Firefox. IE says "waiting for response from swtor.com" and Firefox says "server account.swtor.com not responding." I can log into the game, but not sign into the account on the website (thus can't purchase cartel coins and cannot change my account details or subscription).

I can log in from work (this is where I'm posting from now).

I've opened a ticket in-game (since that was the only communication I had available at home).

EDIT: Likely the "looking into the issue" response means "we'll just wait for the DNS changes to finally propagate" so I guess I'll wait a few more days.

Largely useless advice. Didn't work for me.

Edit: Can finally log in. Took Bioware long enough....

Just an FYI...
I was unable to log into swtor.com/ for over 5 weeks but still able to play the game. So naturally I followed this thread and tried all the various fixes listed on here. I flushed DNS, renewed IP, changed DNS to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 both on computer and router. Cleared all browser history, cookies, saved data, passwords... you name it, I tried it. Made it so I would visit the swtor page as fresh as a newborn babe, lol. Still couldn't log into my account. So then I tried logging into Origin, since EA owns both and the password is the same. Found out I couldn't log into Origin either!? Well what to do, so i changed my password for the third time in as many weeks, and can now log into Origin and NOT swtor! So back on the phone I go and talk to tier 2 customer service/tech support. Spoke with a great guy Ray and he took the time to help. In some 30 minutes of trading information and questions, we noticed that the encryption data was not being verified at the 256 bits that it should when I would get the login failed message... I'm no techno geek, but once I pointed this out from Google Chrome's browser having a caution triangle on the address bar to the far left to Ray he was able to fix something on his end. When I tried to log into the site after he told me to it gave me the check my email for a one time password from swtor and finally! I can log into my account no problems. Long story I know, but perhaps this can help someone else. Happy Hunting.
