I agree, establishing an exaggerated, almost "strawman" caricature of the "other side" instead of engaging with the reality is a big problem in modern discourse in general, and all the worse on the interwebs.

......oh the irony. Apparently a complete lack of self-awareness would be another such problem.

Good luck.

How has your time in game been, you know, since you came back?
I don't believe the post you quoted, it was just a way to turn around hyperbolic vitriol to show how ridiculous it sounds... in either direction.

Since you asked...

Due to the expansion of customization options, I'd move my rating of TOR up to a 6/10. It's fun in a mindless sort of way.

Its purposeful ignorance. They don't want to understand how the real world works.

Well, it is an adventure/RPGish computer game. Aside from watching television or a movie, that's about as mindless as it gets.

Must be good enough for approximately $15 a month.

But if you actually believe you can, or should, get a bunch of sandbox features, you will be very disappointed.

I don't care either way anymore.

I'm just killing time till the new MMOs release. Hoping ESO is a decent enough time killer to hold me over till Star Citizen and/or EQNext.

My youngest is a behavioral psych prof at KU whose dissertation was on MMOs and their place in the social fabric. I got to essentially play part-time RA during his "internship" as a progression guild GM & raid leader in WoW for 3 years. Was seriously fascinating (and scary) stuff.

Clinically, people whose pleasure is derived from taking the offensive against perceived threats to submissiveness are classified as sociopaths. An unfortunate but prime example of this would be Charles Manson. Over time the evasion of consequences for their actions becomes an art form, which in turn immunizes them against reality. The longer they go without suffering serious consequences, the stronger this immunity becomes.

Eventually verbal assault becomes second nature and a more calculated challenge to them without them even realizing they are doing it. In real life people got to jail or enter institutions for such transgressions. Out here they simply change threads ... or accounts.

Nice. So people who criticize a game are now essentially the same as Charles Manson?!

I wonder why people don't take the apologists seriously?

If you are considering criticizing a game to be synonymous with deriving pleasure from taking the offensive against perceived threats to submissiveness, then I guess so. The apologist personal name calling thing kinda ruined any chance for intellectual credibility, as personal name calling usually does.
