Hi everyone!

I wanted to let you know of some changes that were coming to you guys in Game Update 2.7, specifically a change to how Force Sweep deals damage:
  • Force Sweep now requires a Primary target to activate.
  • Secondary player targets are no longer affected by the additional damage granted by Swelling Winds and Singularity, or the critical chance granted by Felling Blow.
  • Secondary NPC targets are still affected by Swelling Winds, Singularity, and Felling Blow.

These adjustments are still subject to change, and we will continue to review how this affects gameplay, but we wanted to let you know what was coming up in 2.7.

Finally you made Force Sweep work the way players have been asking for ages. Now there won't be anymore nerf calls for focus/rage spec.

When we care for others our own strength to live increases. When we help people expand their state of life, our lives also expand. Actions to benefit others are not separate from actions to benefit oneself.

This nerf is actually overkill. They're removing damage increases from the skill tree talent, singularity, AND felling blow..... but only 1 of those nerfs were required, preferably the felling blow (autocrit), or maybe even singularity (double the damage). Either of those nerfs would've been quite sufficient in SIGNIFICANTLY lowering smash's damage. To remove secondary targets from the effects of both of them, AND swelling winds talent?? Dang BW, when you cave in to QQ, you cave big time. This really is overkill, and I don't even like playing smash. Sad part is that focus will still be more viable than watchman. Extremely disappointing to not see any watchman buffs devs.

I agree that making Watchman more viable would have been nice. Also, they probably could have let swelling winds continue to affect secondary targets. But remember that while there is no auto-crit, Sweep still does damage in AoE and it still has a chance to crit, it's just not automatic.

The problem with these nerfs is they essentially make Focus a useless spec in PvP. It basically becomes a purely single-target spec with weaker survivability than the other two trees, fewer utilities and lower burst (at least, lower than Combat). The metagame has already shifted away from the double-smash composition in ranked arenas on most servers; this just essentially puts the nail in the coffin.

I mean, I agree that it is sometimes silly-easy to get insane damage numbers in PvP with this spec, but these nerfs are essentially swinging the needle the other direction. And this coming from someone who never (not even once) played focus on my sentinel in PvP (Combat ftw). If Focus is going to be turned into a single-target spec for PvP, then it should receive some buffs that allow it to fulfill that role.

Bumping up the damage buff from Singularity would not be a bad way to go. This would give Focus slightly higher single-target burst in PvP, in addition to increasing its (currently less-desirable) damage in PvE. Another idea would be to increase the magnitude of the Heightened Power buff, perhaps to 15%. This avoids causing balance issues by frontloading the burst in Force Sweep, while still increasing both burst and sustained damage.

Fundamentally, if these changes as they stand go live, Focus will be a spec that is balanced around being an AoE machine (and thus, commensurately low single-target DPS), but without the ability to put out a substantial amount of AoE damage in PvP.

Without any buffs, it does between zealous strike and slash damage, pretty much a tickle.

There should have never been a spec that could do huge amounts of burst aoe damage in pvp to begin with. That's why Bioware has been nerfing all aoe skills in pvp to not be as effective, Single Target should always do more damage than aoe in pvp.

It still does the same thing to the intended main target and that's all that matters. Focus/Rage spec was always meant to be a spec for Jedi Knights/Sith Warriors to DPS using the force, it should have never been allowed to do huge amounts of aoe damage for that long. The players are now too used to it being an aoe damage spec instead of a Force damage spec, so now they don't want it to go away.
