Oh you can change it. Force everyone to use their real names like they are doing in gaming in China. I don't support such a thing, but people shape up real quick when they can't hide their identity.

The Imp fleet is 50/50: half the time they are helpful and the other half make fun of noobs.
guys if you really want to complain then go play WORLD OF WACRAFT that community is way badder than this community and other mmos wow is the worse community of all the mmos.

You can only thank F2P for this. Before that, none of this happened. Trust my word for it.

I believe the wow community did this. After the 1st expansion pack was introduced the community really started going downhill. People were relatively nice to each other in vanilla wow and did their own thing.

Now with F2P the community has become even more hostile. I don't understand it. It's like a constant power struggle to see who's tougher or has a stronger character out of everyone. I think PVP servers are adding to this.

PvP has been around since the dawn of MMO's.

In certain games the PvP community was absolutely fantastic (not going to keep mentioning the games name though for fear of sounding like I want to make sweet sweet love to it with the amount of times I bring it up).

I find the PvE crowd to be far more toxic than the PvP'ers i've met.

This community is far better than some of the shooters I play but I totally see the nonsense in gen chat.

I feel like this community is turning into the horrible WoW community. Anyone agree?
I always go into the preferences and turn off:
General Chat
Trade Chat
PvP Chat.

After that, the community seems pretty decent.

Chat has become more pubescent since the F2P option was introduced so I agree that the in-game community, while still pretty damn skippy, isn't as docile as it was before then. Having said that, TOR's in-game chat isn't even remotely close to WoW's in-game vitriol. That equivalent would be these forums.
Can we please just have our pre-KotFE SWTOR MMORPG back?

One thing to keep in mind is that just because you don't see the friendly answers, doesn't mean it didn't happen. I know I tend to whisper someone when I answer a question they ask in general chat. The people with smart-*** or worse responses in general are doing it for attention from others, those that are directly trying to help the person probably aren't seeking the attention.

I agree with all of you. I feel like I'm beating my head against the wall sometimes though. It's kind of reassuring to see that there are other people that really are helpful and the majority isn't just a bunch of jerks.

I didn't say it was like the wow community. The wow community has become an entity all its own. But SWTOR chat is creeping up there. Maybe we should can the F2P and go back to a more...shall I say...sophistocated group?
