I don't know OP...are you starting to get the feeling like appearance is pretty important to these folks? At one time early in the game's life there were probably plenty of folks here that supported the visual progression model. Those folks probably left the game long ago, very few of them probably remain. I would guess the folks now are far more casual oriented, and as I said earlier appearance tends to be important to casual players. If this thread is any evidence you can see it's a pretty passionate following.

EA realized that all mmo players want the coolest gear. EA realized they can just sell it to people. EA realized that the quality of content they offer is negligible if they just keep putting out new little toys for the braindead majority to play with.
