I love these forums, they provide an hour of great entertainment after a long nights work.

The way you and Buggs are looking at P2W is so overly broad that almost all games fall into it.

There will always be a way to convert RL cash into in game money. Before the Cartel Market, gold farmers were spamming constantly with offers. If there is no sanctioned way to do it, the gold farmers will supply. Crafting is integral to almost every game. So as long as higher end gear can be crafted (and what would be the point of crafting if not?) then by your definition, is is P2W.

P2W means you can spend RL money to gain an in-game advantage that is not obtainable through normal play. Since the top end gear is ONLY available through playing and not at all through credits, it is not P2W.

Sadly it does make a diffrence.

Initial investments and subscription boundries usually negate microtransactions for the majority of "AAA" mmo's. Only recently have the bigger mmo's gotten into the trend. None have taken as far as SWTOR. They have more isolated cases of mounts (wow) and armor (eq) but none have offered so much of their content behind a sceme such as EA has.

F2P in an MMO where there is no "winning" really means that any advancement at all big or small is paying to win. Make your life easier, get better gear faster....normally in free mmo's, this is what drives microtransactions and thus profit. In such enviorements, deveolopers dont get paid without these microtransactions. EA/Bioware are double dipping, end of story.

Swtor had and initial investment for the majority of its subscriber base that STILL, to this day, are paying for content updates on the CM to be made and that are taking up room in my content cadence. UNACCEPTABLE.
someone bumped it, so.....incase anyone is actually willing to debate this topic....

if you are going to argue semantics of words instead of taking them for what they are face value applied encontext, dont bother replying.

If this game was P2W, there would be Advanced Hilt 35, displayed as a level 78 modification, Item Rating 180, and only found in Cartel Lightsabers.

At the very least the cash shop would offer 75's; it's arguable that they're impossible to obtain in-game for 99% of players.
As it stands, with the exception of lvl10 crystals and lv7 space gear, the cash shop offers nothing that isn't easily found in-game, other than visuals.
What we must fight for is to safeguard the existence of the Sith race and the Sith people, the glory of our children and the purity of our blood, the freedom and independence of the Empire, so that we may fulfill the mission allotted us by the Force itself. Everything must be examined from this point of view and used or rejected according to its utility.

The fact that there's so many things that can be bought for RL cash and then sold to easily build up enormous piles of credits which are then turned into game-difficulty defining gear is ridiculous. At the least packs and market items bought should have the binding time removed and be permanently bound to legacy to allow moving items to an appropriate toon of the buyer's. Things like helping f2p items should still be tradable but the rest allows pay2win to an insane degree.

I understand the company philosophy and "The game needs to be profitable" but seriously, how many mmo's have a significant life-span with this type of economy?

Based on many of the replies in the thread it is pretty obvious there are at least some folks that know exactly what P2W is and that this title does not qualify....at least for now.

As I said before, people can think for themselves. That is the problem with applying the P2W insult to anything you don't like to attempt to create a movement against it...it rarely has the effect intended.

None of the stuff on the cartel market is upgrade to any gear that drops from any boss. When they add gear that is better then any thing looted in game then it P2W dye kits, speeders ,weapon and armor skins are not p2w
