Having read the forums and such, I still have quite a poor understanding of how the tanks are different. I am certainly not looking for a the most powerful tank, but rather what are the pro and cons of each, and how the actual play-style differs?

Thanks!

Assassins are up close and personal, with melee and short range lightning attacks. They get a ton of really good stuff in their tank line and still have a ton of utility. 1 min CC's, aoe knock back, stealth, an ability to instantly remove yourself from combat and stealth. They have all the tank toys and alot of other stuff. Very AoE heavy. This class gets a Force Immunity emergency and some really impressive defensive and offensive capabilities.

Powertechs are kind of a dual nature class. They have several long range abilities, but for most effective tanking you want to be up close like a melee class. Powertechs have mobility abilities like jet charge and grapple to position mobs. They have good damage and versatility. They tend to focus on damage reduction so they make good generic tanks. Other tanks seem to have situational mit for elemental or internal damage.

Can't comment on Juggs since I didn't play one.

Great info, thanks a lot for the reply, based on that I'll definitely have to consider Shadow a bit more!

Is PowerTech more single-target or AoE focused?

All tanks are only fully effective when in melee. Yes, trooper/BH get ranged abilities, but they will be tanking in melee range like the others. No matter what you take you will be effective as long as you have the gear.
-I would rather pay for a great game than play a poor game for free.
-Viable and worthwhile are not the same when it comes to class design.

Beta tester...loved the game, hate what it has become.

It's a bit of both. Most of the PT moves are single-target but they get a decent amount of AoE attacks too. Death from Above is an AoE move of theirs and it's probably one of the most, if not the most powerful attack in the game.

Juggernaut has insane mobility between charge and intercede. A number of CC, like choke, backhand, etc. 2 Spammable good dmg aoe attacks and a multitude of strong single target attacks.

Juggernaut is for you if you like jumping and leaping all over ccing and knocking crap around.
