True. It can make good conversation. "Where did you get a name like Sloopy?!"

Names are fun and creating new ones is a blast, in my opinion.

If its any consolation, who cares what your name is when all these transfers have clogged the server to the point of unplayability.
For every man there is a sentence, a string of words, which has the power to destroy him.

I sometimes name characters names I've used in other MMOs, sometimes create new ones. And yes, there is a certain amount of fun in creating names.

Losing a name sucks, and this should not have had to happen to so many people.

I don't know if it's within Bioware's capability to change their naming convention, or whether they would even if they could, BUT, I think at this point they should definitely consider looking through all the accounts that have been dead and untouched for a year and a half , especially characters under level 10, and free up some of those names.

Brilliant! In what order do you start the process though?

This makes me glad that my characters names are unique, and that during the last merge I had only had to rename 2 of my characters because they conflicted with ones I already had on the merged server.

As is pointed out constantly, you have no idea about the status of those accounts.

Of course I don't, but Bioware does.
I do know there are people that joined my guild back in December 2011, played for their free month, got a character to about level 7, and quit. They have no interest in coming back. I'm sure they are not alone. Even if those people did come back, losing a character name that you played for a few levels 2 years ago is probably not much of a blow. Prioritize the loyal customers, that other company does.

And if it becomes clear to BWEA that "name taken" is a big reason people start canceling their subscriptions, they will do something, I have a hunch coming the forums to complain about it is the extent of it, though.

It's not about me getting the name. It's about knowing for sure that it's actually being used by someone and they didn't just steal it from me and throw it in a garbage can. But you keep feeling all high and might judgmental at me if you need that to feel better about yourself.
