Not only did you take my server away, but you force me to rename my main character, a L55 sorc with 45 days of play time in favour of a L22 mercenary.

Good job, guys, goob job.

Welcome to server consolidation. 99% of the people still playing this game have gone through it at least once, on at least one character.

This is the second time I've been through it and lost my character names.

Sad but true, I lost one of my favorite names in the very first consolidation to a character that's like level 12 and probably a dead account. I really wish they'd do some releasing of names from dead accounts.

Lost six char names during the last round of consolidation a year ago now. The names weren't common, they were obscure SWEU character names from Wookieepedia.

Not. One. of those names has been logged onto since then. I've got every name /friend'd on every char, and they've never once logged in.

Very simple. Send an email to all accountholders. "If your subscription has lapsed, and you haven't logged in in the past 180 days, your name may be changed to free up additional names for subscribers." Give 30 days notice and email once a week until the 30 days is up.

If you can't be bothered to log into the game every 6 months, you should lose your char names.

Or just do away with the "classic" MMO naming convention completely.
GW2, Diablo 3 and more recently Neverwinter all let you get whatever character name you desire - there are uncountable dozens of Drizzt Do'Urdens running around on the latter.
It's because they all give you an online ID (Battle Tag) that's used for PMing, friending, etc...
Thanks for showing us you listen to our feedback, Bioware!
Join the Galactic Referral Army today and see the galaxy! (with a free character transfer and some other shiny Cartel Market unlocks!)
Suggestion for letting us add certain story characters to our Strongholds.

Come on u had to see this coming as u cant have two characters with same name as u cant have two network cards the same mac address as router can t tell who to listen too

When u move server chances are some1 is using the same name as yours and u have to rename sad but true but server can tell whos who
May The Force Be With You.

There are smarter ways to do this though. The most obvious would have been to make Legacy name the unique name that can't be copied and allow the character names be called whatever. On the server side the character names would labeled something like Legacy_Name.1, Legacy_Name.2, etc. This also would have easily allowed people to friend an entire Legacy and get all their friends alts in their friends list too. Instead they didn't think it through well at all. Like I've said many times, one of the biggest problems with this game is poor forethought, planning, and implementation.

And it is a shame -- but also, a name in a video game. You must've known this was absolutely a possibility. You could've easily checked to see if the name was available on any of the servers you were eligible to transfer to. MOST APAC players I know did this:

1.) Check for name availability. If available, transfer toon immediately, or create placeholder.
2.) If not available -- come up with alternate name, or check other servers.

Obviously there is no great solution. And yes, naming could've been done in "better" way. But that isn't what happened. You can find solutions to problems like others did, or you can deal with whatever happens. Being upset about it is really just a waste of time and forum space.

Of course it was a possibility, but they did attempt an implementation last time to give preference to people who have been playing longer. I'm glad it doesn't bother you too much, but to some of us it matters, and I have the right to express that. Thanks.
