Was I in the wrong?

I probably would have done the same thing, although, really, the *right* thing to do would probably simply be to have not assumed anything. They should have answered you in the first place, though. You snooze, you lose.

Although Ive done a lot of raiding in other MMO's, I have not done so here. However, the same observation applies. When you join a good, down to earth and well managed guild and you raid with them, the leader (which would have been far more experienced, typically) may have done that for you just as a thank you, as he or she may do for any other player, for whatever reason that may be. Thats the thing I like about a good down to earth, casual guild that makes room for many types of players and scenarios. However, PUG's are a crap shoot. I think that the choices you made reminded me very much of the kind of tone found in a good guild run raid but in a PUG, over communication is a must. People dont know each other, they are not used to working with each other and like a one night stand (sorry), there is no real commitment there (at times). Most of the PUGS Ive run in TOR have been very fair but also very cold, very business like. MEH! This is a game, I play it for fun. All this to say, you seem like a rather genuine person- I would get with a good guild, where i bet you would thrive.

From what you posted OP, you did nothing wrong. In fact you probably did a lot more good with helping out with roles, etc.

Then the old rule of silence = "yes" can be argued. I honestly see no issue other than the other players apparently being new to MMOs and attacking you because they didn't know better.

You were wrong for cherry picking an item without a roll, not getting an answer is not the same as a yes.

They were wrong for the name calling and hurling insults. There are people that are way to hyper about loot in this game....and there are some real degenerates out there.
May the Schwartz be with you....

yawanna show me where this apparent "silence equals yes" rule is....because I've been raiding in these games since raiding was invented and I've never seen it in a raid. Sure, for a minor piece of gear in a flashpoint, but a set bonus piece that equates to BIS for anything up to NIM? Not a chance.

Depending on the severity of the names they were calling you, personally I probably would have explained that it was a mistake and that no one responded when you asked and then quit the group. If the name calling was severe enough I might not have even handed out the boots first.

It sounds like that run would fail pretty quick without the OP, I wonder if any of them realized that before they called him a bunch of names.

It seems to me like most of the community and most people who raid do not understand the value of a good raid leader. If your raid has a solid leader it can overcome bosses it never would have been able to on sheer player skill alone.

I am kinda surprised that a standard practice to let a raid leader have a piece of gear during the course of a successful run as a thank you for leading has not developed.

But then, people are incredibly selfish and egocentric and probably assume the success of the run was due to themselves.
i can see why a group would require a raid lead to roll for the same chance as everyone else instead of giving them some special consideration.

first off, a strong group can help you get by most bosses better than a self-absorbed egotistical raid lead. certainly not all raid leads are self-absorbed and/or egotistical, but i suspect if there is a raid lead who thinks they need some sort of special consideration over the rest of their team, there is a good chance they fall in this category.

second, a good raid lead should know a good team isn't just face-pounding their keyboard. a good team is going listen, try to improve their performance, try to learn the mechanics, and try to learn their class abilities. the raid leader who thinks they're doing all the work either has a really ****** team, or isn't paying attention. this does not provide justification for getting special treatment.

third, i think some of the people who keep their mouths shut no matter how dumb the raid lead is should get some credit. often times, the raid lead wants to repeat what they saw on the youtube video, or repeat what worked in the past with a different group. sometimes they don't even understand how the mechanics actually work. to not talk over the raid lead and still support a group like that takes a fair bit of patience.

just a bit different perspective.

As they say, to assume makes an *** of u and me

But I'd hold no ill will towards someone who apologized and offered up another roll.
