Go to a cantina or your ship. A quest icon will appear above their head. You can figure out the rest on your own.

talk to them at your ship (or a cantina if you don't have your ship yet).

Companions can only be talked to at certain times and they'll show a mission icon over their head. Depending on the class and companion, this won't hapen until certain points in your class story. For example, with Khem Val, the first time you take him to Dromund Kaas and enter the cantina in Kaas City, he'll want to talk.

Otherwise, you can just right click them and they'll say a random phrase out loud

just complete all your class quests. you'll get your companion before you leave your starter planet.
