Yes, the reason is that most of the regular people out there won't think about it in the chronological way you do. They know the look of these two factions from the movies. You give them that or you risk they will be confused or won't like your product. Since they want to sell mass Star Wars game, they have to make it look the way people expect from SW. I'm not saying I like it, that's just how things are.
