State of the Game #3 Promise Not Delivered

I'd like to see 2.1 patch notes before I start calling out broken promises. QOL features are nice, but they aren't very exciting, so it does stand to reason that they are promoting new customization features.

The designer Kiosk?? Again, see the sentence above.. Another vanity and cosmetic item..

Another irrelevant statement.. We should be thankful that all of them aren't strictly in the Cartel Market..

Again, this is nothing new.. This is what they said they would do.. There is nothing to complain about..

So, before I (un)officially change the name from 2.1: Customization to 2.1: Cartel Coins Required, I'd like to ask for a developer or community team member to get a word on when 'after Rise of the Hutt Cartel' officially starts. I thought it was April 10th.

Instead of quality of life, we've got customization. Before anyone sputters otherwise, I'll state without hesitance that this is not the same thing. Quality of life is a large bubble that includes making the game easier to play, making the game run smoothly, removing bugs from the game, and making as many areas of the game as possible more user friendly. Generally, everything the game has needed since launch. Customization, on the other hand, isn't that. Changing race, hair style, or armor color does none of the above-listed things - it does not make the quality of play better in any way. In fact, judging by the track record going back to... forever, the update will likely not work in a dozen ways from the get-go and cause many complaints with their own merit.

Now, this post is not to argue that the non-content in 2.1 isn't desired. It is, and greatly, by many. And it's appreciated, too. However, that is NOT the point of this post.

I have my wants that top my list. Role Playing players have theirs - chat bubbles, sleeping in their own bed, saving chat logs, and a couple other things that are actually making their way into this update. PvP junkies have theirs - bolster being fixed, mainly, and I do empathize with their plight as it looks as if there's no end in sight for them. My wants? Since the beginning, it's simply been about fixing the game in all the ways it's broke. Seeing Jeff specifically mention that - calling out performance improvements and bugs BY NAME, even - made me a very happy person.

But now? I see that it was all smoke. The first major update after Rise of the Hutt Cartel is aimed solely at separating players from more of their money for customization items. There is not a single part of 2.1 (so far, admittedly, but I'd only be too happy to eat my hat if it proves otherwise) that has to do with what Jeff mentioned. He said that the major focus after 2.0 would be quality of life immediately after mentioning bugs and performance issues.

Well, someone with non-light yellow text: why should I not be calling him a liar?
Barber shop is a QoL feature. Its the same thing as the UI update or the group finder. These things are considered to be quality of life features, as it pertains to MMOs. It sucks that you have to spend real cash anytime you want to use the barber shop but it is indeed QoL.
James Ohlen: " For 2012 we really want players to feel like they're getting their money's worth. You're going to see so many changes and additions to the Star Wars Universe. It's going to be impressive. We have our Update 1.2 coming in the next week and then after that it's going to continue to roll out month after month. It's exciting."

No, I don't, and said claim wasn't made.

And again, if you want to lump customization in with actual gameplay, go ahead. Me? Coming from a long history of console gaming, something I can do in the pause menu isn't what I'd base gameplay on. It also definitely doesn't look like that's what Jeff was talking about based on his own wording.

I never thought of it like that... *sorry about the spotlight*

I can see it now: Future Known Issue: Player names no longer display in chat.

Look behind you and probably 20-25 feet in the air.

The point. It's there.

Doesn't every other mmo charge you in some way, shape, or form for character re-customization??? What am I missing here?

No we are given "complimentary" (don't get me started on that word) coins because we are no longer paying for story content; which values the story content price at $5, since the story content portion of the subscription cost is now gone and replaced with 500 coins.

Also, just because they "said" that customization options will be cartel coin only, why can't we just take issue with that in and of itself as subscribers? Customization is a game feature, it is part of nearly every MMO, and it's identical to the customization that is already present in character creation. What they are charging for is the privilege to use it "again" on the same character, without the option to buy it with in-game currency, which several other MMO's do.

My main personal issue, is that they are treating customization as a non "core" feature of the game. Any long-time MMO player will tell you that customization IS the CORE feature of an MMO, more so than any other genre. So I take great issue with the fact that even though I pay $15/mo., I also have to pay more to use them, or wait months to save up enough "complimentary" coins, paying $15 each month during the waiting period.

This whole thing just makes me sad. I love this game. I don't want to hurt EA or BioWare but I also don't want them to hurt me either.

Usually in-game currency... which can be earned by gameplay.

As much as I want to disagree with the post in this case I find a lot of truth in it. Now granted we don't know much details but I feel and this is coming from a quite loud defender that the fact that the only way to pay for customaization is through cartel coins is a step too far. I understand money is important and believe me I have spent quite a bit on the game but this feature along with other things should be accessible from in game means. For the first time in a long time I'm truly disappointed. Now Bioware if you reading I am your target market I suggest you listen to these concerns. Please.
