Texture resolution.....

A POSSIBLE FIX!!!

Okay folks, think I might have a fix for at least the problems people like myself have had with textures. I owe it all down to playing Race Driver: Grid on Steam. So started that game up and noticed that despite putting car textures to ultra the textures of the cars in game were awful. This left me puzzled, at first I didn't put one and one together. Looked on the Steam forums and someone mentioned Texture Filtering Quality.

So, I went into the Catalyst Control Center for ATI and turned Texture Filtering Quality from performance to High Quality. Started up GRID and textures were great. Then that bulb above my head sounded off and I decided to start up SWTOR and.... BAM! Perfect textures have returned. Need proof, below are some pictures and I'll describe how I did it again.

Picture 1 (with texture issue)
Picture 1 (now)

Picture 2 (with texture issue)
Picture 2 (now)

Picture 3 (with texture issue)
Picture 3 (now, in cut scene)

ATI users:

- Simply go into your Catalyst Control Panel (right click desktop and you'll see it).

- Go to the 'Gaming' sub menu and you'll see a list of sliders.

- Find Catalyst A.I and move the slider to 'High Quality' and Apply.

Simple, and should hopefully fix the issue I've been having. Don't have an Nvidia card but I suspect the process is reasonably similar. Any Nvidia users who are able to look into it, I'd appreciate it. I know Nvidia have a similar program anyways.

Only issue I have come across is performance which as taken a slight knock, I'll look into that though. I suspect it will have to do with the workaround for textures to work properly who knows. But still, it's something.

For some reason I cannot turn AA on in the .ini file....When I add AA into it the game just turns off....Strange right?

That's the low-rez texture fix for ATI users you've stumbled across. It was already known for quite some time that having those settings in the CCC set to anything but quality can lead to low resolution graphics ingame no matter which graphics settings you select.

The fix you found doesn't solve the problem with the high texture setting only applying in the cutscenes and character selection screen and not during regular gameplay.

If you look closely you'll notice the screenshots of your armor in the character selection and the cutscene look very crisp, but that's because you took them at the only times where the game displays them in such high quality. If you look at the same pieces of armor while ingame and not in a cutscene, you'll notice they look worse and that's because ingame those armor textures are Medium, not High.

That's the problem most of us would like to see fixed, we want those high textures ALL the time, not just during a few select moments. And this isn't something we can tweak with ini files or graphics driver settings, it seems to be an inherent restriction in the game client.

Sadly that's not really what is wrong with SWTOR. I have an nVidia card and always have Texture Filtering on High Quality.

Look around you in-game for a while. I'm pretty sure you will come across a lot of blurry, low res armor textures on NPCs and players.

I feel the exact same way. Graphics dont make up for bad gameplay, but great gameplay cannot make up for graphics (imo).

If I am going to be looking at a game for hours on end, I want to enjoy looking at that game. And SW: Tor's textures leave a LOT to be desired. And the shadow textures, its like Skyrim where the shadows are like 512x512 resolution at best.

I hope that they release a texture pack upgrade by this time next year (This wouldnt be something they could do right away I expect, it would take a LOT of time and money, even to resample the existing textures) so that those of use that have comps built for cutting edge gaming can really pump up the graphics on this game as nothing out on the market can slow my machine down.

That being said, I wasnt going to play SW:TOR because of the graphics, but decided to give it a go anyways, ended up spending my ENTIRE weekend playing the game (I get 3 day weekends every week).

In this case the gameplay makes up for the graphics Lol, but I still would love to see higher resolution textures.

I'm willing to cut them a break as it's only just been released, but I'd like to see a HR Texture package for download at some point. Even if it's another 20GB I'd still go for it!

I'm glad others are talking about this issue - has a dev ever commented on it? Wish I could search these forums...
Bioware - Please stop advertising with high resolution textures if they are impossible to implement in the retail client.

Fair enough, though they look exactly like they did in the beta to me now. So I guess I can't be of much help. Maybe I'm missing something. The textures in the cut scenes always looked better then they did in actual game play. That's always made sense to me and the armor, cloths and such look great in game play for me now.
