Please start taking some action against people that are using /1 to sell instead of the GTN.

Sorry, by general, I meant /1.
That's what this thread is here for. To get the community to take action.

Folks need to have more consideration for other players and at least have enough respect to use the proper channels.

General chat is for general conversations yes.. but some conversations are not meant for public viewing. So if you want to block people selling then you need to block the stupid stuff people will talk about too. they can talk it private. aka regulate the whole channel not just some of it.

I would put idiots like that on ignore in a heartbeat. However, I do not wish to put someone on ignore simply because they are selling something. However, if they continuously spam general chat with their wares, I will. I would like them to respect people by using the trade channel like it is meant to be used. If I turn off trade chat or move that chat to another tab, I don't want that circumvented by someone who thinks that he is too important for common courtesy.

I understand your concern, but that is not an easy problem. For now, I'd like to tackle the easier issues.
People selling in general chat can be stopped by a community effort. Your issue is a global issue, if the world can't solve it, how do you expect us to?

Solution: Stop spending 7 hours standing in one place on the fleet.

The problem is... you can't fix "stupid"

This is a known fact.

It's not just fleet.

I have a GTN alt on Nar Shadda and also one on Coruscant so I am there reguarly several times a day. It's actually worse there sometimes... people chain spamming several GREEN items with WTS over and over again. I've even see it now days out on the more distant planets, though it is not as bad.

I think the best solution would be for Bioware to insert redirect filters that detect and send the messages directly to /trade. Anyone wanting to link armor to just share and epeen about can easily see it in /trade when it gets redirected. We are never going to get the populations on the servers to self-manage in the modern MMO era.

Now... as for the bacon... I have no idea what we do about all the bacon smack talk in /general. Same goes for Mom smack talk and several other popular and often targeted topics of general chat. But hey.. baby steps... get the trade spam out of the channel and then see what might be addressed next and how.

With the general state of general chat (redundant?) I am not moved by the argument that a WTS is all that degrading to chat. Furthermore I find the ponderings of many in chat to be no less bothersome than an item for sale. If someone is being disruptive to your conversation, ignore is certainly an option; or you could take your important conversation to group chat where it would get the privacy it requires.

Your witty 5 person conversation isn't all that important to the ~ 100 people viewers of chat. Especially when the conversation always devolves into jawa this or chuck norris that.

This probably would work, but I seriously doubt that they'll spend dev time on it.
Why not try and get the community to manage itself? There's no downside to failing and success would not only solve this issue, but also show that the community isn't a mass of mindless players and that we can solve some issues on our own.
