Star Wars is not, and never will be, hard science fiction.

After Han, Leia and Chewie walked (not floated) out into the interior of an asteroid with nothing but, what looks like, a dentist's novocaine mask, any possibility for making SW hard scifi was totally gone, if it wasn't already gone before that. (just one of almost countless examples)

In the absence of hard scifi, you are left with the "feel" of the SW universe. Anything in it will conform to that already established feel weather you think it makes sense with existing tech or not.

If you don't understand that, there really isn't anymore that someone can say to you.

And I want realistic technology to be more like Star Wars.

And I have a droid not an iphone.
You realize that those holo-communicators have the capability of communicating over extremely long distances right? The ME equivalent is the Quantum Entanglement Communicator, which cannot be hand-held.

That being said, I'm kind of tired of having to put up with 1979's idea of a futuristic society just to satisify the die hard fans of the original Star War's films. I mean we have these big clunky computers with nobs and flashing lights, giant holo communicators (hell the iphone is more advanced than that), etc..... It's all very retro.

I know I know, most of you are thinking, "But It's Star Wars! It's suppose to be like that!" Well this is 2013 not the 1970s. Things need to be brought up to date imo. The technology in a sci-fi game should at least be equal to or greater than the current tech of today I would think.

From what I can remember, Mass Effect was pretty impressive and all the tech was believable. No reason the same can't be done here and still be considered Star Wars.

/end rambling complaint
Yeah riiiiiight .... Anachronism in a "fantasy" "game" based "a long time ago in a galaxy far away".

There are a frack load of pseudo-scientific ways to explain the way things are in "The Star Wars Universe" without having to be in line with "reality".

I Would Like to See This Thread Die.

Please stop posting in this obvious flame bait thread people. It's over. Ample and adequate explanations were given and the OP himself stopped replying 2 pages ago. Let it go.

TL;DR the tech is part of the lore and the lore is timeless.

By the way..... exactly what part of the tech is not believable to you? Hand held holo-communicators are way advanced compared to today's iPhone.... and holo-com is thousands of years old.
Agreed, the SW universe is a great mixture of old-fashioned and future technology.

Lore-wise, isn't it meant to be that technology essentially reaches a plateau thousands of years before TOR and that with periodic conflict between the Sith and the Republic, means that the SW universe tech stays the same, essentially, from millennia to millennia?

Seeing as that I was conceived using 1970's technology, I take great offense at this thread.

Would the OP prefer seeing the modern day technology that is Carrie Fisher in a slave bikini as well? Certainly newer is better, right? No thanks, but I will settle for the old fashioned 1970's technology.

Now please excuse me as that imagery has given me the irresistible urge to vomit.

It was not an asteroid, but a huge space worm. It even had mynocks living inside it so there had to be some minimal atmosphere there. I guess even old junk like Millenium falcon has some "external sensors" that can tell what is outside the ship.
But yes, SW is not really high on the Hardness Scale, and it is not really meant to be...

to some degree I actually agree with the op. Its entirely possible to modernize the look and still be star wars. Just look at star trek. They did it with the newest batch of movies where the tech looks light years beyond the original or even the stuff that came later time period wise but still made it work

Not for nothing, but it technically was both as the Worm was living inside of the Asteroid
