I love starwars while i hate Sci-Fi, hell yeah, Star wars is something different than any other Sci-Fi story in fact it doesn't feel as a Sci-Fi universe at all and that is why i love it.

so whatever idea you bring here is not from/to Star Wars, if you thing what exist here doesn't go along with your imagination of a Sci-Fi world then i think you need another universe, you can even make your own universe where everyone has an IPhone.

That being said, I'm kind of tired of having to put up with 1979's idea of a futuristic society just to satisify the die hard fans of the original Star War's films. I mean we have these big clunky computers with nobs and flashing lights, giant holo communicators (hell the iphone is more advanced than that), etc..... It's all very retro.

I know I know, most of you are thinking, "But It's Star Wars! It's suppose to be like that!" Well this is 2013 not the 1970s. Things need to be brought up to date imo. The technology in a sci-fi game should at least be equal to or greater than the current tech of today I would think.

From what I can remember, Mass Effect was pretty impressive and all the tech was believable. No reason the same can't be done here and still be considered Star Wars.

/end rambling complaint
"Technology Marches On" is a concept that really wreaks havoc with long-term properties like Star Wars and Star Trek. It's just something you deal with in the sci-fi genre, especially with these stories that don't go away.

That said, your iPhone is nowhere near being able to project a holo-image while communicating with personnel light years away on other planets, and if it was, I'm guessing the technology would understandably be just a bit more chunky than a regular cell phone.

I have to agree with people saying that it wouldn't be Star Wars anymore if the whole design went too hi-tech. Star Wars actually isn't even retro. It's more like a sci-fi/steampunk crossbreed. With an industrial look on the Imperial side, and a Scrapheap look on the Republic/Rebel side.

I personally prefer the Mass Effect franchise, though it's not exactly because Mass Effect has a more hi-tech look, though I do love those corridors with glow lighting. It's more because I find the characters in Mass Effect are more mature and have some depth, where most Star Wars characters have a personality as flat as a piece of cardboard. Mass Effect is more mature overal in my opinion, with no Jar Jars to cater to the "whole family experience". It's a mature franchise without having to drench the player in gallons of blood to accomplish that. It's simply mature because it manages to handle mature themes in a mature manner.

I don't expect all that from Star Wars. It simply wouldn't fit, it wouldn't feel Star Wars. And while I do prefer it, I simply wouldn't want to see Star Wars turn in that direction. Each has its own style, and Star Wars fills its own niche very well, while Mass Effect caters to the other niche very well.

I'd definitely like to see Mass Effect become a bit more recognized though, and have its own market segment with books, art, movies and more games, instead of sharing so much of its fanbase with Star Wars, Star Trek, Tron, Alien, HALO and other sci-fi franchises. So in addition to the Star Wars nerds and the Trekkies, we'd get a recognized and sizable group of passionate Mass Effecters as well. If I were owner of the Mass Effect franchise, I'd already be talking with HBO about making a miniseries called "Citadel" or "Omega" or something like that.

That's not even real 3d. It's still a 2d image. From whichever angle you would look you would still see the same, it's just a lame Pepper's ghost trick.

The REAL 3d hologram would be something like this:

http://youtu.be/KfVS-npfVuY

And it's still not even close to the star wars quality.

Make Star Wars believable?

OK, so lightsabers are out. As is just about everything a Jedi and Sith does aside from gymnastics and talking.

Also, traveling from star system to star system would result in the people on those star systems aging years or decades relative to you during the time you were in transit. Of course, we can't travel faster than light without destroying ourselves, so the whole notion of interplanetary travel needs to be scrapped.

Hmm... what else?

EDIT: Hoth and Tattoine would be dead worlds - no oxygen. At a minimum, you'd need an environment suit. Though with the radiation from 2 suns, it's going to have to be a pretty spectacular suit for Tattoine.

Gravity on the different worlds would be interesting too. The smaller worlds / moons might see us jumping around like Neil Armstrong on our own moon. Well, hop-skipping, anyway. Certainly unable to fight. The larger worlds might require an exo-skeletal support unit or environment suit.

It's sci-fantasy. You have to suspend disbelief.

sry smartphone doesnt work across the galaxy. Your point is mute. Not only is mute on all levels, but mainly on the intelectual/conceptual level. Wich makes it mute by default.
Its fiction, its More then that its fantasy fiction, it doesnt even have the pretense of being science fiction, its cleary Fantasy adventure fiction. reality doesnt apply it doesnt need to, to make it plausible.

Well, yours and PurpleLynx's examples are different. Purple's showed Human Form Holograms while your examples showed Object Form Holograms. Eventually through the Tech of both, we'll eventually get Holorooms similar to the Holorooms on Star Trek and eventually we may get to the point where we will be able to have Holograms that function similar to that of the Doctor in Star Trek Voyager

His example was not a hologram, it was a simple projection on a glass. It was FLAT. If you stood behind the glass you would still see the "front" of that anime chick. It's just a simple illusion. Watching a "3d" movie with glasses is more 3d than Pepper's Ghost trick. What I linked was actual 3d images projected into the air, and you can in fact see other sides if you moved around, it was best noticeable when it showed that mask.
