Because it's not set in our universe. At least not our galaxy. Mass Effect, for example is set in our universe so the tech looks more realistic.
Tech does not have to follow earth's progression if it's not based on our universe. Be glad all the spaceships are not organic fish hybrids or something at least.

Also if the movie started with 70s style it must remain so, otherwise it will feel out of place. Look at Alien franchise for example. In original movie all the computers were so primitive with tiny crt monitors, yet they already had spaceflight. Then in prometheus all monitors were either lcd or even colorful holograms, even though it's set before the original. It just does not fit.

The only way I (Myself, not speaking for other people) would accept updated tech is if Lucas would go and rererererererererelease all 6 star wars movies with digitally updated tech from 70s style into 2013ish.

But even then after 50 years some guy will come in and say "oh look at these unrealistic 2010s style hand held devices, we all use our brain implant-computer thingies ad we don't have long distance spaceflight yet, let's ruin the star wars even more by updating it's tech to match 2063!"

I suppose you want dubstep in the next Star Wars soundtrack, too?

What part of "a long time ago" don't you get from the "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away"? It doesn't "modernize" because it's inherently its own fantastical (yes, fantastical) setting.

They won't do this, and I'm glad they won't. Get your technophile kicks elsewhere. Like, say, 99% of the rest of sci-fi which is so busy modernizing that it's basically soap operas and terrorist hunting in space.
A fantastical setting that was concieved in the 1970s none the less...... lol

I like star wars the old republic and would like to see it modernize and ditch the 1970s retro look.

Flame on.

So a setting that's chronologically even older than the setting in the "retro" movies should have technology that resembles your little tablet and smartphone addiction so you don't feel uncomfortable. Waaaah.

I respect your opinion but disagree. I thought Prometheus was great and is exactly what I'm talking about. They upgraded the old school tech from the old Alien movies. Fit just fine for me. I think that SW from here on out will have to (and should) do the same otherwise its not going to make it as a franchise.

Prometheus didn't really get recieved all that well but imagine if it didn't have the eye candy. Imagine if the style was from the old Alien movies.... People would have laughed at it as a movie being released in 2013. It would have been a complete failure imo.

That's the point im trying to make. Make star wars MODERN. Make star wars believable.
Wait... so your Iphone... can produce holograms in 3D/16 million color images in the palm of your hand of a person talking to you in real time? What the hell am I doing with this Android phone!

Err... ok, yea I know that's not what you are saying (I couldn't resist), but form factor aka the flashy look is not the indicator of advanced tech. It is an indicator of good marketing. Miniaturization is a good thing largely, but if you can get the job done in the palm of your hand with a clunky communicator and you are not trying to impress the Organas why would you go looking for something else.

Think if it another way... the mere fact that poor famers on Tatooine have holo commincators which by all indications are a dime a dozen tells you something. The fact that home computers are not keyboards and displays but walking or moving droids with their own language and sentient to a great extent says something.

You are looking at things of another world. Our rules don't apply. And as for realism... you checked "suspension of disbelief" to buy this ticket. As long as they remain consistent to Lore, form factor has nothing to do with it.

OP, it seems that the fanbase is pretty happy with a retro escapist look. Han Solo's not getting a bluetooth anytime soon. Sorry!
