Actually, orange gear has the best lifespan. The only gear sets that do not transfer set bonuses are Tionese, Columi, and Rakata because they are apart of the same tier and based on the old gear system. It was never updated, because the newly introduced gear from 1.2 on allowed for set bonus transfer b/c it was attached to the armoring mod instead of the gear shell.

So in actuality, if you buy cartel armor, you suffer only while you are gearing through Rakata. It is extremely easy to get BH comms now. So all you need to do is focus on earning BH comms. Then purchase the Campaign armorings from the BH vendor and you will have your set bonuses. Then min/max with the best mods/enhancements by buying the BH gear you need and pulling those items into your orange gear or reverse engineer them and use the stabs to have level 27's crafted.

Like they can't retroactively move those bonuses from the armor to the mods? I've seen items change while I was wearing them. Why wouldn't they be able to do the same here?

Only the meek get pinched. The bold survive.

Until I started getting Dread Guard gear, I ran around in a set of Columi with Black Hole armoring.

BH armoring has no set bonus. If the set bonus was stripped off of the Columi shells, I would have lost the bonus.

It's not that the players couldn't solve this problem by getting Campaign armoring or some such, it's that if they were forced to do so by losing their shell set bonus, it would be bad.

Sometimes it is an issue. Take the Shadow Tank set for example. If you had even a slight idea about Shadow Tank itemization before you get the free Tionese set, you'd find that moving the mods to an other piece of armor would cause a downgrade. Specifically your shieldrating would probably drop a bit much. So you need to keep at least the 2-piece bonus, or jump some hoops (like adding a bunch of augments) to compensate.

Still, it's a free set, we didn't get that stuff a year ago upon dinging 50, so I see no reason for actual complaints. Moving from Tionese to either Blackhole or War Hero gear is really a tiny step.
Tionese with its shell-bonus is an outdated relic of the past. And you're getting it for free, where those mods used to be UNREMOVABLE and people actually spent WEEKS aquiring it and really had no other option than to wear it!

Have a moan by all means OP, but don't buy a cosmetic from the CM and expect to have benefits that players not wearing CM costumes don't have.

I would say that the majority of players do not equip the Tionese/Columi outfits as they have created their own look for their characters and while they may not have paid a quick $15, they have spent time and exploration sourcing that look. You are not worth any more consideration than them. You both made choices about your characters costumes, live with that choice happily or suffer shoulder-pads for a while.

Then unify colors so they all match your cartel chest piece.

Problem solved. Move on.
Yup. Did the same thing. And on one toon, I only cared about the first bonus as the second didn't do much for me so... only used hands and legs for the bonus and I have a very cool unique look.

But for the most part, Campaign armoring is the long term solution. If you don't want to grind out Campaign armoring... that is all on you. You don't deserve a bonus because you can buy Cartel armor.

To all those wondering why BioWare is not retro-changing the Rakata tier set bonus. It was announced way back in 1.2 that it is the developer's intention to keep the set bonus attached to the shells because they wanted an alternate way for players to gear for progression. By keeping set bonus attached to Rakata shells, players can choose to upgrade their armors through crafted methods and still obtain best of the best gear while still keeping the set bonus.

In my personal case, I am glad that old Rakata pieces have bonus on their shells because that means when I leveled by 5th alt to the max, I can gear it from zero to hero in 30 seconds by using Tionese shells and the Advance 27 armoring which I pre-crafted for it.

In short the reason why developers are not changing Rakata tier is because of the desire to keep flexibility NOT because they were lazy.

This^^. And I hope Tier 1 Sets will stay that way forever.

Tionese, Columni and Rakata were all left with the set bonus in the shell because people modified their armor big time beforehand and if they changed the armoring... they would of lost the bonus. It prevented them from retroactively making the bonus attached to the armoring. The higher tiers began at this update, so there was no pre existing conditions with it so that tier and beyond were attached to the actual armor mod.

Only feasible way I could see them bypass that issue is to make set bonus armorings for sale independently for all tiers like campaign, or at least crafted by cybertechs.

not only that, it's cheaper to rip out all the mods from a piece of armor and put it into another than it is to re-augment your new gear, so going forward, getting dread guard and whatever comes beyond that, it'll be cheaper to keep the cartel-bought armor set and just swap the mods and armorings around (and yay, still have set bonus)
