The Female Gamer - Are you guys not over this yet?

Like many have stated, this isn't a "gaming" issue. I'm a dude and find the idea of a female gamer "hot" Why? Because its simply a woman sharing my interests. Are men attracted only to women who share their interests? No. Why? Because guys are dudes. That may be a rhetorical tautology, but its also a logical tautology. Guy's like to look, and just as a guy will look at a pretty women, well that's what you become in our minds. The anonymity of MMOs perhaps just might embolden some is all.

You have a lot of people saying its juvenile and unrepresentative of men in general, well that true too. How can it be both at the same time? Well you got me. I cannot understand the human psyche nor even pretend to. All I can tell you is I find soccer chicks sexy as hell, yet don't care for women basketball players. Out of uniform, though, and it doesn't matter what they play, it only matters how they look. In the same way, some men will find gamer chicks to be smoking because they are gaming, while others just see basketball players. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say, had it been a different time of day, you'll find the same guy not caring, not flirting.

So the answer to your question is no answer. Guys will not get over it because really there is nothing to get over. Guys are guys, gals are gals, and we all just coexist...most of the time.

Many years ago, back at the dawn of the internet age, yes, before there was anything we even called 'the internet', I used to frequent local BBS Meets. The gender ratios at these did typically favor males, but not by the numbers that are trumpeted these days. It was at worst 70/30 and at best pretty close to 50/50, but probably averaged 60/40. The guys were always happy to see the gals, certainly, but there was never this 'OMG a GIRL, how can you be here, this isn't for you!'. It was just 'Oh cool! Hey, are you a SysOp? Come on in, have some pizza!' (these Meets always seemed to happen at local pizza joints).

What happened when online actually evolved into the world wide web/internet? Did we XXers go into hiding? Flee for our lives? Abandon virtual reality for the real deal? Was my local network area just an odd outlier in gender ratios? I don't know. I never left, and I never plan to. I'll just continue to scratch my head and wonder what the blazes happened, I suppose.

I've always been here. I'm sure there are plenty of others just like me. I'm sure there are plenty of others that grew up with the internet in their lives, who learned to stay quiet because it's a rather unfriendly place (and not just to females). Just keep in mind that the anonymous person you're talking or mouthing off to could be anyone from your grandmother to your little sister and you'd never know it. (Ok, maybe not YOUR grandmother/sister, but I know a 70 year old grandma who got hit up for some rather kinky cyber, oh if only the guy on the other end had ANY idea what was going on at her end of the line...hahahaha!!)
What a delightful anecdote.

I agree OP guys should really be over it by now. Especially the more 'mature' ones. Sadly, this does not seem the case. Sorry you get this.

However, i just want to make the point that, while the frequency isnt so much. Men get this a fair bit too. Times i have helped someone out. Grouped with them for a space of time and done a fair few missions with them. They find out we are opposite sexes and they begin flirting heavily. Apparently grateful for my help etc... (before i go on this is not me being big headed, as it is the last thing i would ever want in a game.) Not everyone, of course. but it has happened more than once. Problem is, i'm a roleplayer. So sometimes you think they are flirting IC. I made the mistake once of starting a RP relationship, only to find out she wanted to make it serious. (Big mistake, i know.)

Anyway, just wanted to let you know, you are not alone. And that us guys are not safe either. Haha

Oh yes, the "poor menz can't help themselves" chestnut. Think about sex all you want. And if you want a date, hit the singles bars, go on OK Cupid, whatever it is people do to hook up these days. Or pay a professional; whatever - you have options which don't involve quasi-anonymous harrassment. An MMORPG is a game, not a singles bar.
is that any different then women stiring up drama any chance they get?

She's a female gamer. Some fool without a clue tried to pick her up. She ended it.

It should have ended there, not followed up with a diatribe about the oppression of women in video games.

Goodness people.

I don't give a wet slap how old they are, although the average age of a gamer is 38 and rising according to our most recent stats. But even if they are still in high school (hell, even if they are still in short pants) , that's no excuse for behaving like a sexist creep on-line. Ignoring time after time after time just perpetuates bad behaviour on the part of little twerps who think it's OK. For two decades we've been told not to feed the trolls, and the result has been more and worse trolling, not less.

It's time to try actually calling pathetic little man-children (and they are a minority, but one that poisons the well for all of us) out. Ignoring doesn't work. Pretending to be male, or never speaking, just reinforces the idea that women are rare and not welcome.

You speak as though this were an isolated incident.

If it were, I'd agree with you. But it's not, and insisting on a pleasant and welcoming gaming culture is not "stirring up drama". Unless you think women should just shut up and be glad they are allowed in the room in the first place.

No, no. Not at all. The drama stirring happens all the time. ;p

Welcoming? I'm not even sure what that means. I do know that this has nothing to do with women, women's rights, women's responsibility. I'm sorry if this is offending you, but I've grown up around women that truly believe in equality....the type that would deal with it, end it, move on without having to rant on and on ad-nausium about how unfair and unwelcoming everything is to them, especially in today's world where people bend over backwards to include women. Hell, the president is under fire because he's not including enough women.

I've played this game, raided with dozens of women and never once saw any of them play this card, so the fact that there are still women doing so amazes me. I mean, one has to make a choice at some time. Do women want to be equal or do they not? Its not a buffet where one gets to chose only those entries that are palatable. Random kid harasses her in game, tell him to pound sand, put him on ignore, laugh about it with your friends......just like the guys do.

The victim card is already way overplayed in this thread. if one is not allowed "in the room" today, it's their own fault, their weakness as an individual, not because they are a female.

Would seem to me that you're a little uptight OP... That said, if you don't like guys to begin with then it's really not a guy flirting with you issue, it's simply that you aren't interested in flirting with people outside your gender preference.

On the flip side though, if you were flirting with a straight girl online, she might have the same issues... And may not have issues with guys flirting with her... In fact she may be the one doing the flirting with a guy.

I've played MMO's for years... Both with straight and gay gamers. Have played with girls who play guy toons and guys that play girl toons, for any number of reasons.

I've also known many people who have met spouses and lovers through MMO gaming... Really this isn't an issue with people flirting in MMO's, I'd suspect you would find the same issues out in the real world also, until or unless people know your preferred gender interest.

Typical feminist response.

Nobody here said women should shut up, you're now trying to insinuate that people speaking out against this silliness means they are against women.

You conveniently ignore the numerous threads where this kind of stuff has happened to men as well, but they don't start threads like this. We can just brush it aside.

Imagine if a man encounters an attention-seeker and then starts a thread "The Female Gamer - Are they not over attention seeking yet?" I bet you're gonna blast him for being sexist and about how men can be attention-seekers as well.

This thread is pretty much what it is, sexism towards men by implying that only female gamers face this problem. At least we acknowledge that women do face this problem. People like you think that male victims are invisible. And we don't see you call out on those women hitting on men.

Unless of course you are implying that only women can flirt with men and men can't, trying to control what men can or cannot do. You claim to want control of your own lives, yet you try to dictate and control what men can or cannot do, and still expect to be taken seriously.
