Totally, defending a human being is totally white knighting especially since most people in-game are mature enough to understand... right?
She shouldnt have made a thread to bring something to attention that bothers her?

It's strange me saying this, seeing as i'm male and all,but i quit using any kind of voice chat on any games now, completely.Last 2 i played, out of 5 guilds every single one of them had a few females and buncha males, and any time you'd go on chat to co ordinate any raids etc,it was all pervy flirting, degenerating into the downright disgusting. This from guys in their 20s and 30s(women too)...i will never get the attraction of being sexual towards others in a game,never.Baffling.

The even less mature behaviour of young guy hitting on anything with a feminine looking pixel has not imo, waned over the last 15 years, you can still see it everywhere you go.

You are a girl your going to get hit on
Personally I assume all people here are fat boy or girl and that is just not my speed
I find it funny that there are so many pervs I rolled a female toon and got hit on lol

It is what it is but for every person that hits on you there are many more that could care less about you

All that being said I do have to point this out
There are probably a lot of guys that think the idea that girl could be hot and play video games is the coolest thing in the world
I guess in a way I would be slightly guilty of the same thing
In real life i am fireman and a bodybuilder but here I am gamer and a starwars nerd
You know how many people in real life play video games with me...Zero
You know how many know I love starwars.....also Zero
I am sure there are tons of people like me that think, wow this girl likes the stuff I like and find that appealing
Of course they forget that girl may like that stuff but she is probably hideous

My advice is stick to meeting people in real life because the chick with the golden voice is probably gross or a dude

I jokingly stick to a claim that girls don't play MMOs, it's a marketing gimmick created by video game companies. Remaining in denial about it helps me keep my sanity.

....
I'm fairly confident that one can tell if a player is male or female after 1 or 2 decent RP sessions.

What an absolute load of codswallop. There is no reason why women cannot be respected as much as men REGARDLESS of how many of us there are.
Meh...

For the most part men are by nature are constantly looking for a female to mate with. simple logic as a species we seek the opposite sex to complete us both mentally and physically and provide companionship.

Another fact and truth regardless of the age or maturity level, men spend a great deal of time thinking about sex, even married men do. it's in our nature and sadly we haven't been emasculated by society enough to be persuaded to stop yet.
Oh yes, the "poor menz can't help themselves" chestnut. Think about sex all you want. And if you want a date, hit the singles bars, go on OK Cupid, whatever it is people do to hook up these days. Or pay a professional; whatever - you have options which don't involve quasi-anonymous harrassment. An MMORPG is a game, not a singles bar.

BTW, Hitting on everything with two x chromosomes isn't "masculine" - it's pathetic and creepy. And treating women as people rather than potential bonks isn't "emasculated", it's simple good manners. When you are with a group of gamers, playing an MMO, do them the simple courtesy of treating them as gamers. Even the ones with girly bits.

The most recent statistics on gamer demographics say that 47% of gamers are women, and that MMORPGS are one of the fastest growing sectors for female participation. But even if women only made up 10% of the playerbase, how does that make it OK to harrass them? This idea that "oh, that's just the way it is; it's part of gamer culture" is just a shoddy excuse. It's not OK.

You wouldn't ask a complete stranger if they cyber if they were standing in front of you, so don't do it online. And if you would ask that of a complete stranger, get professional help. You have way worse problems than loneliness.

I have my own experiences and thoughts on this as well.

I made a female toon as an alt back in WoW 7 or 8 years ago when it was really popular. I had heard female gamers mention being harassed but I chalked it up to mere attention whoring. I tend to try a different gender character in most of my games that have both options, usually there is no difference but sometimes there is and there's no real reason not to.

Well I was shocked. The constant tells and some of the comments, honestly I guess some of those comments made me feel violated, and as a guy knowing I can just log off and I'd go back to normal it was really an eye opener. I haven't had that same issue in SWTOR and do think the majority of the population is older and things have changed. If you were back there in the WoW days you'd know what true harassment can be.

On the vent issue, honestly, I never want voice chat in these games because I really don't want to talk to any of you people. I played a lot of sports and even served in the military, with the wrong group of people around you any competition can be a mess. With a bunch of low achiever MMO players and the bottom rung of society it's even worse. I am only willing to do voice chat with people I know already in person, because their maturity is higher and they're similar to me in terms of being considerate to other people. Even in the military, there were high achievers, but the younger guys could be really annoying, but the thing was since you were in person you could tell them to stop and they would. That won't happen in just voice chat when there is no face to face component.

If you want to make new friends I don't think an MMO is the way to do it, there are a lot of activities you can do in person that will put you in contact with lots of other people. Sports but also many volunteer activities, hobbies or events.

There is a stigma and stereotype for MMO players for a reason. Yes it doesn't apply to all, but it applies to so many that you do have to take into consideration that you're likely to run into those types. But honestly even outside of MMOs, a lot of people these days are rude and inconsiderate. I work at a pretty big company, I am on good terms with over a hundred people but I actively dislike many of them and there are only maybe 5 that I really enjoy conversing with and working with. Age is not the sole factor, and there are many annoying older people, but in general I've found the manners and upbringing I've had are more often reflected in the older generations than they are in the younger. And it's almost always by previous income levels (since currently we're all at about the same). I hate to say it but there is a certain refinement found among people that have had extremely high incomes at some point. These people are extremely unlikely to ever touch an MMO.

There are people who have pursued relationships in a MMO and end up getting married. Rare but possible.

And I'm not sure why, YET AGAIN, this kind of stuff warrants another thread, like as if only male gamers are the ones with the problem or that flirting with the opposite sex is the biggest travesty that womankind has faced.

Pretty sure there are female gamers who use their gender as a weapon to ask for special privileges or favors, or are just plain attention seekers, but you don't see male gamers write thread after thread asking females to stop doing that. Because eventhough that is indeed bad, it is only a minority who do that and to write such a thread would be an injustice to the majority.

I once had a female officer ask me whether or not I got my free tionese set after that patch, when I was already packing Columi and doing hardmode Lost Island.
If the genders were reversed, I'm pretty sure you will see a thread of overexaggeration of how despite decades of women playing in video games people still do not take women gamers seriously and how the women's movement has been set back 50 years, the insinuation that female gamers are not as good, etc, etc.

But because I was a man being told that by a woman, I just said yes I did get the free tionese set, and gave a slight hint that I got a nice columi weapon from LI without sounding confrontational.

Maybe you females should stop causing drama over the slightest of things and taking things personally. Harassment is a problem, but now being PMed by a member of the opposite sex is considered harassment? How can anyone take you seriously anymore?
