The Female Gamer - Are you guys not over this yet?

Okay, I see what you're saying now. I have no intention of making it seem like I'm 'available', either, as I'm not. I just get tired of being assumed to be male. It just seems to have gotten worse over the years (I'm 40, and I've been active online since 'online' existed, and I've seen how things have.... evolved, if 'evolved' can be used in such a devolutionary fashion.)

And now I understand here, what you're meaning by genderless.. yes, I just want to be treated as a person. But the person I tend to be treated as is labeled (either explicitly or simply implied as) 'male', and that is what gets annoying, which is when I tend to bring up 'hey, not EVERYONE online is male, ok? thanks.'

However, recently, we had a situation where we had a pug DPS join our OPs group because we were missing a dps. We invited him into TS and the second he noticed that I was a girl, I started getting tells from him almost right away. I have no idea how young/old he was, but I'm 26 and am not in the mood to have guys flirting with me over an MMO.

I've been playing MMOs since I started FFXI over 10 years ago. I was young when I started playing and have always created male characters. I felt like it helped to avoid the whole getting treated differently for being a girl, and all the rest of that.

When I started SWTOR I followed the same thing, old habits die hard I guess, and I created a male Trooper. However, once I joined my guild and started using voice chat with them, it was obvious I was female. Everyone in my guild has been cool and we have a couple of other girls in the guild as well.

We run a teamspeak server and recently put our photos as avatars for fun.

However, recently, we had a situation where we had a pug DPS join our OPs group because we were missing a dps. I also haven't seen anything like this in a while, nor heard of it, and figured it was a dying thing with mmos where guys have finally realised that "yeah, girls play too." But apparently not.

From my experience most of these occurrences are usually someone in a group asks, the girl "accidentally" let's slip that she's female, and the most immature person of the group needles her about it, and she "reluctantly" plays along - and if the conversation dies, keeps saying "Wow, you're really surprised I'm a girl?" - while the rest of the group just ignores her/them.

Maybe I'm cold or being too mean toward the issue, but I tend to feel this way towards those who don't define themselves as gamers, but being The Female Gamer, with capital letters. Ugh.

Also, why is "revealing my gender" in GAMEs so important? in games everyoen should be just seen as "Player" .. a genderless person to communicate with.. not girl or boy...

Glad to see more females coming out who enjoy gaming. I will now Share some wisdom with you from a males point of view.

For the most part men are by nature are constantly looking for a female to mate with. simple logic as a species we seek the opposite sex to complete us both mentally and physically and provide companionship.

Another fact and truth regardless of the age or maturity level, men spend a great deal of time thinking about sex, even married men do. it's in our nature and sadly we haven't been emasculated by society enough to be persuaded to stop yet.

Men/boys will be nice to girl gamers, but our fascination with the female species is like an addiction to a drug. we always seek your attention admiration and praise. if it seems you have no concern to do that then the male ego almost automatically goes into ego protection mode, which ends with you being called some pretty harsh names, and having those same pictures you let foolishly slip out be used to covet a bruised ego from rejection.

The hard fact that the majority of males play videos games, points to the obvious conclusion that it's a male dominated genre, and any female who expects to enter better be prepared to protect herself. your first mistake was putting up a picture of yourself.

you might as well un-sub now to be brutally honest with you. you have now sent the message that it might be possible to date you, which if any male in your guild finds you attractive, you have already been targeted for the never ending war for a females hopes and affections and attentions. i wish you luck at life and logic.
