Its the same for all genders... if you dont want soemone speaking spanish to you.. dont reveal you're speaking spanish.. if youre a girl.. and dont want flirt.. then just dont reveal you're a girl.. do not join PUGs or just dont talk IF you dont want to get flirted...
Well, "mate", I refuse to have my gaming experience compromised because some little dorkbrain thinks an MMO is a good place to chat up women. I don't go online in an MMO to get a date; I go to game. And I'm not going to be intimidated or harrassed into giving up Vent just because I run into little boys with the social skills of a rabid weasel on a regular basis.

That easy.

I should not have to hide my gender just to be treated like a gamer rather than a potential date. I'm sorry your wife has been intimidated into an inferior gaming experience, and I'm astonished that you are OK with it. If someone harassed her in real life, would you tell her it was her own fault for going out of the house in the first place, and she should just stay home? Or might you say "wow - what a d-bag, I hope you told him that you don't date outside your species."
Two blasters; no waiting!

I have not noticed any differences in naivety and cluelessness levels between SWTOR, WOW, Rift or TSW.

IMO the community has not evolved or de-evolved. It has simply grown to include a larger more diverse portion of the population which naturally includes many good and bad apples.

When I started SWTOR I followed the same thing, old habits die hard I guess, and I created a male Trooper. However, once I joined my guild and started using voice chat with them, it was obvious I was female. Everyone in my guild has been cool and we have a couple of other girls in the guild as well.

We run a teamspeak server and recently put our photos as avatars for fun.

However, recently, we had a situation where we had a pug DPS join our OPs group because we were missing a dps. We invited him into TS and the second he noticed that I was a girl, I started getting tells from him almost right away. I have no idea how young/old he was, but I'm 26 and am not in the mood to have guys flirting with me over an MMO.

I also haven't seen anything like this in a while, nor heard of it, and figured it was a dying thing with mmos where guys have finally realised that "yeah, girls play too." But apparently not.

It's rather simple type /ignore

Haven't read the whole thread, but too many girls accidentally "let slip" that they're a girl, while saying they hate how they're treated because of it. Most of them secretly want the attention. They might make a big deal of it, they might make forum posts loudly exclaiming "wow, I can't believe you guys aren't over this already!"

Most players won't care, most girls who don't want this to happen simply won't let it be known that they are a girl, and the ones that do, will just say "shut up". "deal with it" or just leave if they feel they're getting harassed.

From my experience most of these occurrences are usually someone in a group asks, the girl "accidentally" let's slip that she's female, and the most immature person of the group needles her about it, and she "reluctantly" plays along - and if the conversation dies, keeps saying "Wow, you're really surprised I'm a girl?" - while the rest of the group just ignores her/them.

Maybe I'm cold or being too mean toward the issue, but I tend to feel this way towards those who don't define themselves as gamers, but being The Female Gamer, with capital letters. Ugh.

I'm female. Being female is nothing to flaunt, it's also something I don't care to hide, and I shouldn't have to.

I don't feel it's necessary to make sure everyone I ever communicate with knows from the get-go that I'm female, but if I keep being treated as male, it bugs me. I'm sick and tired of being called 'man', 'bro', 'mister', 'sir', 'dude', so yeah, I might respond to someone who directed something like that at me- and that's not flaunting my gender, it's me being irritated that males have faked being female online so much that now it's damn near the default to treat everyone as male. THIS IS IRRITATING, and I shouldn't be treated badly for feeling irritated about it. That does not make me an attention seeker. I mean, honestly, you can't tell me most typical men would ignore repeatedly being called 'ma'am', 'missy', 'chick', 'girl', etc. Just try it, see how long you can get away with that. It's just as irritating to us having it turned around the other way. (So please, folks, recognize that it's not necessary to genderize general statements to someone. You can just say 'Thanks!' instead of 'Thanks, bro!' Even the little things add up over time.)
Well my wife atleast knows that she dont wants someone else.. so she dont gives them the impression of being "available" whats wrong with that?

nowaydays girls have to be a *** ?

Emancipation never meant to turn girls into whores .... like they do in "Sex and the City" ... ( TV-Show )

Also, why is "revealing my gender" in GAMEs so important? in games everyoen should be just seen as "Player" .. a genderless person to communicate with.. not girl or boy...

Wow... no wonder there's still a problem judging by some of these comments.

I had a guy whisper me the other day complementing my characters outfit. He then asked what it was like to pretend to be a girl in game... I was like ***?! I told him I wasn't pretending and that just opened up the floodgates. What was I wearing, how old, do I cyber...

Yes he's a jerk and yes he's now on ignore but seriously people, why should it matter if I'm a guy or a girl?! We're not a novelty, we're people.
Meh...

Okay, I see what you're saying now. I have no intention of making it seem like I'm 'available', either, as I'm not. I just get tired of being assumed to be male. It just seems to have gotten worse over the years (I'm 40, and I've been active online since 'online' existed, and I've seen how things have.... evolved, if 'evolved' can be used in such a devolutionary fashion.)

And now I understand here, what you're meaning by genderless.. yes, I just want to be treated as a person. But the person I tend to be treated as is labeled (either explicitly or simply implied as) 'male', and that is what gets annoying, which is when I tend to bring up 'hey, not EVERYONE online is male, ok? thanks.'
