Games like UO forced you to venture into the most dangerous areas to get the "best stuff". In these areas you would find the strongest monsters but at the same time you were away from the protection of town - you could be killed by other players.
No flags, no switches - you could just be killed.

I remember a cycle as people started playing UO. Initially they would post on the forums about these killers. How they ruined the game, how it wasn't fair.
Slowly they grew to realise that firstly they added a sense of danger actually making things more exciting and that it was logical to gain those rarer items you have to take risks and venture into the more dangerous areas.

And so full circle we go. Once again the complaints begin. Lets hope people are like the UO communities of old and grow to realise that just getting the best things without risk really is not fun.
UO added a safe world - you could go to all the dangerous areas but other player couldn't attack you. Subscriptions fell every year from that point onwards.
Subscriptions fell becaus of the PvP ganking, thinking anything else is blind. The reason subs stay low is because the PvP ganking makes the game unfriendly to those who actually do want to participate in what was a great game, outside of those PvP areas. The one thing anyone says now about UO is "Awesome game and you will love it, but prepare to be ganked".

But some games are designed for PvP and work really well, I pretty much hate PvP on most games but played a PvP MMO (Neocron) for years because the game was based on PvP and PvE was the side event. PvE is the main event in SWtoR.

They just need to clarrify if Ilum is PvE rewards or PvP rewards. I will be happy for the PvP crowd if it is PvP rewards, and I will be happy to know that I can just avoid it. BUT if this is another level PvE 50 activity that I know I won't enjoy (I am not a big fan of raiding as an endgame either) then maybe the game isn't for me.

I play on a PVE server because when leveling, I don't want to be ganked, i just wanna level and get past it. However, I love pvp, much more than pve, and I especially love open world pvp. I went to outlaws den solo and killed people, both imps and rep, for maybe 3 hours. I started with the philosophy of "if its red, its dead". Then, when I noticed people who were dying a lot, I'd then help them out. I also attacked large groups whilst solo (managed to kill 4 at once) so I couldn't really be accused of ganking. In short, it was great, and it renewed my faith in the game for a short time.
Did you give any thought to the 4 players who weren't in PvP gear, didn't have PvP specs, and were caught completely off guard while trying to have fun?

Your example shows world PvP being fun for 20% of the people involved. A sure fire way to kill the game.

World PvP is only a good addition to the game when all participants are ready, willing and decent, which means they will have rolled on a PvP server in the first place.

If you want world PVP, go on a PVP server. On a PVP server you should be auto-flagged for PVP everywhere.

If you're on a PVE server you should never be auto-flagged for PVP. Ever. At all. Except if you choose to go do a warzone obviously.

Why so many people (including the makers of this game) find this quite simple concept so difficult to grasp is beyond me.

Or......If you enter one of the 2 PvP zones. They're no different than warzones in terms of VOLUNTARY participation/entry.

Not EVERY PvEer is anti-PvP. If you don't like it, skip it. It's PvP content, not PvE. In order to enjoy it, you know you're risking having to PvP...so if PvP is that scary to you...just skip it!!!!

I am a PvPer and I do feel we should have the option to flag when we want to. I remember how it was in SWG back in the day to goto the imperial guy and go Overt to pvp. that is a option that should be in this game.

Now, people will look at it this way, Your on a pvp server you chose to be here so deal with it.

If it's pvp content and it offers only pvp rewards then fine. If it's pve rewards then we have a problem.

Would you consider cosmetics, vehicles or pets "PvE" rewards? Or would it be ok if they were PvP exclusives, like the MOGUL droid or speeders are PvE specific?

No, you do PVE on a PVE server and PVP on a PVP server.

Again, I don't know why that's so difficult to grasp.

Just make the rewards pvp-specific, so the pve players can be aware the content is not for them and just shrug the content off.

Seems odd to make another scaling system pvp-exclusive however, we already have a ranking system for pvp.
