The problem is it doesn't clearly tell you to look in your inventory for your new stuff. It should be a pop-up window with a quest reward so that you know it's being given to you. The first time I got one the only way I knew it was there is when the vendor wouldn't buy it from me.
I think what AgentJacen means is have a mission completion window pop up that shows you what your rewards are.

Maybe the easiest way to direct players would be a mission that you automatically get at lvl 10 that says "go see your Advanced Class trainer on fleet" (or maybe have it direct you to the NPCs outside the elevators to keep them relevant).

Sorry again that is not the designers fault. It says right in the quest it is for GEAR. Come on people. You turn the quest in and get 99 tionese com's. This is totally gimme gear at this point. How much easier do you want these guys to make it for you. If you can't follow the directions on a quest then honestly you don't deserve the gear.
You want to know how people can miss that quest for the Tionese commendations? It's simple, really. It seems that the e-mail you get that starts the quest chain has to be triggered. That means you won't get the e-mail if you don't meet the trigger's requirements. Also, it seems that hitting 50 is not the only requirement for triggering the e-mail.

As far as I can tell, the second trigger (possibly third trigger, as I haven't been able to rule out class story completion as one) is that you have to take the elevator from the main level of the fleet down to (or up to, if you prefer) your ship's hangar. Why? I have no idea. However, between my brother and myself, we tested this 3 separate times (I know that's not a big sample, but that's all I have access to at this point). Hit 50, take that elevator, and then (and only then) you immediately get new mail.

While it seems like everyone will take that elevator eventually, it is possible to just miss it. I know I generally avoid the fleet. After hitting 50, I know I continued playing for over a month before I received the mail that starts the quest.
...and I knew about the mail and quest chain from reading the forums.
...and I had done several searches trying to find information on why I hadn't received the mail. I could not find this information anywhere, though. Maybe my search-fu is weak, though. I don't know.

So, I ask you, next time you hit 50, to test this out. Pay attention to when you actually get the mail. See if it happens after traveling from the main level of the fleet to your class's docking bay. Whatever happens, report back on the forums.

I don't know, maybe I misinterpreted what happened. Maybe it's more/less complicated than that. However, I was able to play for over a month (after hitting 50 and completing the class story line), with many hours of actual game play logged, and never got the mail. Then, my brother happened upon "the secondary requirement" and I followed his instructions. I ported back to the fleet, went down my class's elevator, and came out the other side with the "new mail" notification.

Now, I have to ask, why would there be a secondary requirement at all? Why not just hit 50 and you get the mail?

I havent seen "many" players without advanced class even i ve been playing since weekend betas but I have seen a few times players still havent chosed their advance classes at lvl 15/16/17/18 . Some of the people you are refering dont speak one single english word. They have no idea what is written on the screen. They play subconsciously. You cant blame the game for it. Game interface is responsible for situations you describe but I think swtor's interface is the most optimized way for this genre. However as a publication designer I believe you cant adress , communicate to every type of people whatever you design , you should define scope of users and understand how they percieve and their needs to convey the data. Finally I must confes that Im one the players who missed advanced class trainer and raged hard on the first play but its not related with interface.

Heh. This is my first modern MMO so I've had to learn a lot of mechanics that the designers likely assumed I knew already. I had no clue that it was even a container because the icon looks like vendor trash instead of every other container you get. In the last game I played certain class abilities were tied to inventory items so I just assumed... (cue Felix Unger)

Other mechanics of that game I had to deal with were "Inventory Tetris" and item weight. I'm pretty religious about keeping my inventory clean so rarely is it every more than half-full. I also make a point of keeping up repairs on my equipment so plenty of opportunity to sell off junk and stuff I'm no longer using.

Finding an off-hand saber and scattergun (for my Scoundrel) elsewhere was trivially easy. It would have been nice to have the oranges earlier, but acquiring those on my own weren't that much more difficult.

Yes, and you know how you trigger it? Change zones. Yeah, hard stuff, I know. Like I had one character on the fleet and I was all "hey, where's my e-mail you b*****ds?" Then I took the elevator to the hangar level and suddenly go the e-mail. My character on Belsavis got it as soon as he went from one zone to the other on the rakata transporter doing dailies.

The requirement is level 50.... and apparently, able to read.

I remember in the early access so many of my guildies trashed their adv class bags because they had no idea what it was.. it was only when a few of them put in tickets about how to get adv class ietms and CS replied... they got their invetory bags un deleetd for them (sent via mail) and in teh next patch they made it so you cant just delete it as trash anymore.. although I still hear of people being able to trash them somehow :-/

I played my IA a year ago all the way to 50, completed the story and was about level 20-odd on my Jedi Knight before I realised what those bags did.....
