1.7: Thoughts on the Reputation System

I am interested in the community's thoughts on the reputation system 1.7 will be implementing. Currently, I have no opinion of it though it sounds positive at first look.

I assume it is a method of getting organic world PVP going on different planets and keep it from being exploited like the last system. If the Ilum event is as "recurring" as a few months, that could be good.

Titles are also shown in the screenshots at certain reputation ranks for each faction so that shows promise and it is linked via legacy which adds another layer to the system.

Any commendations/criticisms of what you see?

I assume that the rep system isn't tied to PVP.

that said I'm fairly happy with the idea. we'll have to see how much of a grind is associated with it. so long as it's not launch era "rise of the god slayer" bad it should be fun.

Personally I'm a big fan. Not only does it add depth to the Legacy system, which I thought was going to be discarded since the Cartel Market rolled along, but it provides a useful time-sink AND, to top it all off, looks beautifully designed in terms of how it was integrated into the U.I.

This last part actually may be one of its most positive aspects, since the U.I. design has looked so atrocious ever since the 1.2. update, which offered players customization.

I hope it isn't like the STO reputation system. That is all.

I'm just glad to see the Legacy system is growing and getting attention from the devs.

More grind, and better not cause forced pvp on the pve servers.

CAUTION: DO NOT LOAD SWTOR UNLESS YOU HAVE AFTER-MARKET COOLING INSTALLED!!

It's a grind system, basically.

You have to perform missions to gain reputation with a faction , along with gathering resources to send to the faction. At a certain point, you ascend to a new tier, which unlocks projects you can grind on to unlock items you buy for your character.

As an example, you can grind reputation with Romulans by doing a bunch of mindless Romulan minimissions (chasing bunnies, helping lost people, killing bugs -- no, really). After this you ascend to tier one, which unlocks some consumables and some tionese-level-style gear. Grind more and you to go tier two, which unlocks more, tier three unlocks more, etc.

Each level not only requires in-game currencies , time, and effort, but also crafting resources and in some cases the equivilent of commendations. So rather than add content, you spend weeks grinding away these repeatable tasks.

At first , it sounded like a neat way to get end-game gear without having to bother with the random-drop chance from raids (which, for the highest tier of gear, was RIDICULOUSLY low). It ended up reducing end-game to grinding , dumping tons of undergeared people into raids (with the predictable results -- imagine a group of 3 people in green 48 gear going at HM LI) and , of course, if you stuck with it everyone could get the best gear in the game and so no one had any measure of being one of the best of the best.
