SWG had space - it was a GROWING community within a decreasing population, those who actually enjoyed the space aspect ended up going to Startrek or EVE.

EA should take a few pages out of Battlegrounds ... the space in that game was *great* ... ground and space, all in one 'instance'.
And that's the thing, with primarily EVE being already there for space, years ahead of SWTOR in terms of content, BioWare had to make a choice. Regardless, they were going to be years behind on other MMO's. Whether that be in non-space combat, or in space combat. You cant split that up even further and practically have nothing concrete.

It's simply not going to work out.

If this was 10 years ago, developing both would be fine.

Crowdfunding provided Chris Roberts with 6 million dollars in one month to do EXACTLY THAT. Funny how much people want a great space game.

Eve is tbh kind of a boring space combat, what I and I assume many with me wants is something similar to the X-wing vs Tie Fighter series of games.
Is that to much to ask? Apparently yes, i still want it but not gonna hold my breath that its gonna happen.

Crowdfunding would have been a good idea. I don't think any open game have ever tried.

At any rate, I think a BF2 style space battleground, with PVE and PVP elements, combined fighter and personal spaceship play, multiplayer and the ability to fight on foot inside the capital ships (objective or assistance based) would be a great addition to the game.

IMO BF2 had one of the best approachable space combat minigames in the genre. I liked JTL, certainly, but travel times were a chore. Would be better to have a single but large combat area instead...think Illum in space.

I was playing Revenge of the Sith on my nintendo DS the other day. That game is mostly a 2D side-scroller but it has 3D space sections that are far more advanced technologically than SWTOR's on-rails space system. Oh yeah, and it's multiplayer with the option to put in AI bots in the place of humans.

Wait, I'm confused. Are you saying that Bioware started development on a JTL-like off-rails space combat before SWTOR went live?

Space Combat – We will continue to add missions to the space game. We also have a special project going on right now that will expand space gameplay in a significant way… for now the details will have to remain under wraps.

yes in fact we have known since beta that the current space combat system was just a place holder until the real space combat what ever that might be gets made.

Now we don't know how different it is. It could be full Jump To Light Speed or it could be more of like a Battlefront 2 instanced warzone match.

Either way they are working on it. In fact in the last live podcast thing they do they said that they got to play the demo of it and implied it was multiplayer.

edit here is the latest mention from the Live Stream on Nov 29th 2012

Q: How is the super space project doing? Does it exist? Schubert: Oh, it exists. Hickman: I was actually playing what you're talking about yesterday, running through the prototype demo. I wish I could give you details. It's great. It's a departure from our current space game. We have a team dedicated to working on it. But it is far out in the future. You won't hear anything about it any time soon. Schubert: It is under wraps. It is a lot of fun. It's definitely not anything we've shipped in the original product.
