Odd Launcher crash

Here's a bizarre twist to this story...

Lat night I (being an experimental type of person) decided to see what gaming would be like if I underclocked my video card to the lowest possible settings. So I fired EVGA PrecisionX which is the basic UTIL for my card and then started up SWTOR.....

The launcher didn't fail on the 1st attempt! This blew my mind so I tried starting the game up again with normal clock settings but with precisionx still loaded up and again, 1st time load in no problem.

I'm going to experiment with this some more tonight after I'm done stuffing my face.

I was not able to find anything in the logs file. When I looked in the Event Viewer I found this:

Code:
Faulting application launcher.exe, version 3.2.3.4, faulting module patcher.dll, version 3.2.3.4, fault address 0x00019c6f.
All the other error logs that I looked at said the same thing.

Well, that's definitely the launcher/patcher dying, then. But if there's nothing useful in the launcher logs, that'll be really hard to debug remotely via a forum. About all else I can suggest would be downloading the SWTOR_setup.exe again and running that to completely replace your launcher/patcher (it won't reinstall the rest of the game), and see if that fixes things.

Here is a log file for today. The following is me patching the server with an incorrect password and the second is when I log in with the correct password. I will not get a crash unless I use the correct password and the log in attempt is an odd number. Honestly, I am not sure if it is always an odd number, but it is pretty close to being so.

P.S.: The hash file has been seeded by myself and is not the original hash. I don't think that there is any other security sensitive info in there.

Yeah, I have nothing more to suggest, I'm afraid.

From the log and the crash report we can tell that the patcher portion of the launcher is crashing, probably as it downloads and parses the patch manifest for the English resources. But unfortunately, even if we can tell what is happening, neither the crash log or the launcher log gives any real indication of why.

Ah, well. Thanks for looking into this and giving me some tips on where to look in the future. Unlike some trolls who have nothing but bad things to say about Bioware or EA or just the game. I trust Bioware. They are most likely already aware of this issue and are working on it. If they are not working on it at present then they are working on other issues and this is on their to do list and it will get fixed as soon as they can.

No matter what it is still an easy thing to work around even if it is slightly annoying.

No problem, I'm glad to help where I can. I figure if more people pitched in and tried to lend a hand as they went through life, the world would be a more pleasant place.

I just wish we'd been able to figure out an actual solution for your problem, instead of just narrowing things down "the patcher's horking up a hairball." (But yes, at least knowing where to find those sort of diagnostic logs is useful in general!)

That's a healthy attitude. As obnoxious as this is, at least it's not a critical one; if it happens every other time, you can at least still get in and play.

I really feel for the folks at BioWare Austin right now, especially the CS folks. The F2P launch has not gone smoothly, and there are lots of angry people. Which is admittedly justified, because there's real actual money being lost now (as opposed to pretend Star Wars credits) what with the introduction of the Cartel Market. Unfortunately, many of those folks seem about ready to try to kill and eat the CS staff unless the yellow names on the forums fix things. And the poor forum CS team almost certainly doesn't have much more information to give anyone; they've got to be drowning right now, and so there's probably very little they can do to calm the loudest/angriest voices.

The launcher crashes appear to have stopped. This appears to have coincided with my Netnanny internet filter expiring. When the filter is renewed I will post again to let you know if the crashes start up again. I rather hope that they do because that will lend a lot more credibility to the hypothesis that there is a conflict between the two programs.
