They both were the face of the game at launch and seemed very willing to stay for the long haul

They were more like the game's mascots, EA were pulling their leash the entire time and they probably couldn't take it any more. While there is no actual factual proof of this, it's generally what most people have concluded.

Maybe because TOR has been an unmitigated disaster for EA that has already cost them millions and ultimately will cost them millions more?

This was supposed to be at least in the neighborhood of WOW...it has become the most expensive flop in the history of online gaming to date.

They were told to leave...they didn't get a choice and any company would have fired management who did such a terrible job.

The last EA Quarterly report said volumes by saying as little as possible about SWTOR. You know how bad it was when SWTOR was burried in the report and Simpsons Online was trumpeted as a rousing cash success.

Simpsons...Online....think about that.
This is my signature.

Because the game tanked compared to expectations and they were a part of the problem when all is said and done

I honestly think it's less the financial figures and more the loss of control. Having basically built the company and its whole image, credo and everything, and then having to watch it dragged through the mud while being powerless to do anything because you're not the top boss anymore. I bet, even if TOR was a financial success, they would've eventually left in a situation where, "We want to do this, this and this", and EA is all, "Nope, nope and nope."

Agreed. And this is why I no longer have any hope for this game. Daniel leaving is the last straw for me. How sad. To see a great game like this just die.

I for one am glad that D.E. left. At first I really liked him, he is a charasmatic guy and I always looked forward to his pre launch interviews but as time went on it became apparent that he had NO IDEA what MMO gamers wanted or how to handle an MMO. He helped create a game that he would want to play not what we would want to play. Before anyone chews my head off, I love SWTOR and hope it has a bright future but there are a lot of key elements lacking that should have at least been in the oven since before launch; exotic races, appearance tabs, open world objective pvp, more tools for social interaction, mini-games (modders made pazaak for jedi knight jedi academy multiplayer, why dont we have pazaak?), npc factions with rankings, accomplishments, ship customization, etc. etc. I hope the new leads do better than their predecessors because honestly if this were a random sci-fi mmo and not STAR WARS I would not sub or even F2P. As it is though I am here for the long haul and have my fingers cross that things will improve.
