I have been suffering on and off from unplayable performance issues since Game Update 1.4 was introduced, I can only assume this is due to the optimization tweaks made to improve shadow quality and augment performance for players using an SLI configuration.

Please BioWare, *test* what you are doing before you roll it out onto live servers. I am fed up of having to pay for the privilege of adjusting my in-game settings and/or drivers weekly to account for changes you have made which you neglect to even mention out of courtesy in the patch notes.

Worst of all there is no indication of a solution, or even efforts into resolving the problem, in either the Top 10 Issues & Solutions or the Known Issues threads, despite several community-created threads highlighting both the severity of these performance issues and how widespread they are. The audacity you show in continuing to charge players to attempt to play this game despite the extent of these technical problems, exacerbated by your own inability to provide any information whatsoever on when we can expect a fix, is frankly appalling.

In an effort to actually bring about a solution to this problem, here is a list of the details of my own experience:
  • Toggling "Scale Nameplates with Distance" has no effect
  • Completely disabling shadows increased my FPS dramatically from <1 to over 100 while static, however it immediately dropped to <10 again on any attempt to move either my character or the camera.
  • Playing in windowed mode no longer has any noticeable benefit, this had slightly alleviated the problems in the past.
  • Previous issues with visual artifacts and columns of light (seemingly related to the user-interface) seem to have been resolved with no changes made to my settings or hardware.
  • Rolling back my GPU driver had solved the problems up until a Tuesday maintenance a few weeks ago. The old drivers no longer appear to perform any better than the most recent one, I have now updated in order to harness the benefit in other games.
  • Restoring my GPU to factory settings from my stable overclock has no noticeable effect in TOR, and decreases the performance in other games. Temperatures never exceed 60 degrees Celsius.
  • I do not experience performance issues in any of the other games I am currently playing: Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Max Payne 3, Mass Effect 3

System:
  • CPU: Intel i7 960 @ 3.2GHz (stock)
  • GPU: 1.5GB ASUS GTX580 DirectCU II (OC: 875Mhz Core, 2100MHz Memory), w/ 306.97 driver
  • Memory: 12GB 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance DDR3

Hello -Siala-,

Can you please try clearing your DiskCacheArena, and then see if this gives any improvement. You can get to this by navigating to the game folder and then the swtor subfolder. Then delete the DiskCacheArena file, and it will be recreated when you restart the game.

If this has no effect, please try the following to rule out any conflicy with other programs running in the background: Try running the game after performing a clean boot – Microsoft have information about how to do this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 – (Please revert back to normal boot afterwards).

Finally, could you post a copy of your DxDiag in this thread so I can have a look at your system specifications?
Please post the DxDiag within code tags or spoiler tags

Go to Start menu:
  1. Type dxdiag into the Search/Run box
  2. Select the "Save All Information" button
  3. This will create a dxdiag.txt file(Please remove your PC Name before posting)
Let us know how you get on.

Hi Ratae, thanks for your response; I hadn't tried clearing the DiskCacheArena before but it didn't appear to have any effect either. The game still drops below 10 to 15 FPS as soon as I attempt to move either my character or the camera and is completely unplayable.

I haven't tried using a clean boot yet but my background processes haven't changed since far before 1.4 (peripheral software, Fraps, MSI Afterburner, Avira AV, Steam & Origin)

Not sure what extra system information this provides to what I provided in my original post other than OS, but here's my DxDiag info as requested:

Hello -Siala-,

Thank you for getting back so quickly – the Dxdiag gives a lot of information about a computer system including information about graphics cards and drivers, which can affect how the game runs. In your case the drivers are up-to-date, so we can eliminate that as a cause.

It would still be worthwhile running the clean boot. If that improves the FPS rate, you could then add the background players you need one by one, until the rate drops significantly again which would point to a possible cause. I realise it’s a bit of a trial and error approach but hopefully it will be worth it in the end.

Thanks very much for your cooperation.

Hi,

I seem to have same problem with OP here's my dxdiag.

Also I want to make a note to the fact that newest AMD catalyst drivers 12.4 got me crashing everytime straight in Character selection window, cycling between black and loading screen ending up crashing either in bluescreen or getting stuck at black screen and needing to hard start my computer.
I rolled back to 12.3 drivers and I'm able to get past Character selection and enter the game. Which is unplayable.
I press turn, it will have 0.5 -2 sec delay and then my character hops straight anything between 180 - 360 degrees and dont even ask moving forward

I am playing currently GW2/WoT/TSW and other games without any problems. And I played with this exact same computer (14Gs more memory now) SWToR for many months after launh with high settings... what happened? Can't play even with Very Low setting now. Many posts about 1.4 in here CS forums. What did you do?

One weird thing worth mentioning. When I rolled back to my 12.3 Catalyst drivers couple days ago I was able to play 1 night about 2-3 hours with minimal lag and good fps. Next day I logged in I was back in this FPS mess.

***edit*** ***edit*** ***edit***
Nameplates seemed to get the fps up a bit.

I have done a clean boot and even loaded new drivers while in a clean boot and I still had a performance issue. Turning nameplates off seems to be my biggest factor when troubleshooting my performance issue but even then its not a smooth as it use to be.

Hi Ratae,

I'm well aware of this, however I included most of that information in my original post.

As I have said, I struggle to believe a conflicting process is likely to be responsible for the cause as I have very few background processes running (and those which are have done so consistently since the game launched and have not caused any issues in the past).

Regardless of this, I tried a clean boot as advised and that also failed to resolve my performance issues.

I am almost certain that the changes made to the game's optimization in GU 1.4 and subsequent patches are responsible for the performance issues so many of us appear to be suffering from. The fact that we seem to only be experiencing these problems with your game and only since GU 1.4 would definitely suggest that. I believe that intervention from the development team is required to solve the problem, rather than anything the players are able to do from our end. All we can do is provide information, although I resent being charged a subscription fee to test and report on what is broken in your game.

Lesrach I'm not sure if it's a typo but your Dxdiag suggests this: 12.4 isn't the latest revision of the Catalyst driver set.

The WHQL version for that chipset is currently 12.10 which I use on my older laptop with no issues. The driver stamp should be 9.002 where yours is 8.950.

You're running drivers from about 9 months ago.

look.. this problem is an EA / SWTOR problem..., if suddenly MANY people are comlaining of the exact same thing and yet cust svc keeps telling us all to do the same things and then blames our ISP's or computers or whatever else they can other than actually looking at their own equipment.... please, please, please!!!! look at your own stuff...

Ok,

up until about a week ago i have only dealt with occasional lag spikes.. but since about monday til today it's been horrendous. Server lag ranging from 103ms to 863 ms consistently. when on phone with SWTOR support, they are just blaiming comcast.. however, i play other games and have zero problems with lag.. tracerrt and pathping show there to be a problem with packet loss.. but it appears to be at swtor and they still blame comcast... then they say that it must be my hardware ( not the case either... )

whatever the case, SWTOR does nothing but point the finger at everyone except atcually fix the problem... any input????

Some playing with packet sizes in MTR definitely shows where the problems are starting... it may not be a SWTOR issue directly, but it's definitely at their end.
