Should subscribers have to pay for Expansions?

No.

But it might depend on the magnitude of the content.

I think swtor should have a better pricing model. A B2P model with a cash shop. I think that is better and also forces the team to deliver content that keeps subs, and makes players happy.

Better than a f2p with too many restrictions, with a p2p, and also paying for expansions with a cash shop.

A f2p system similar to a b2p just brings a lot of players with a complex payment method. I think that will be more negative than positive.

It's stupid question, because subscribers will pay for it one way or another. Only thing they can decide, do they want more content faster, or same content spread over time.
Creating conent has it's costs, and game have to turn profit. If people won't buy expansions, BW won't make expansions, resulting in less content over time.
So question is: do you want more content?

Asheron's Call puts out new content every month with old technology and they apparently turn enough of a profit not only to keep going after all these years but they've even brought out a couple of expansions. So there's that.

Also, DDO, before FTP did maybe 5 updates in like (some years), but after FTP they came out with like 8 (I think) in the first year, and a few after that before they made an expansion. I never had a sub for DDO, but I own it all (except for the expansion) but I never play it because after I started playing this, well. . .hard to play any other MMORPG's, and I've been playing since. . .wait, that has nothing to do with anything, but anyway, it can be done. Depends on the level of greed involved, or some other factor I might not be aware of.

I'll answer that for you.... yes they do.
Yes, I agree. Perhaps BW can launch separate expansion with a space and a ground expansions. The space expansion being a real 3d space combat.

BW also intends to put out new content every 6 weeks, and possibly release full paid expansion one day. Point is - if people don't want to pay for expansions, there are no expansions, and as a result players never get anything above promised piece of content every 6 weeks.
It can be done. It will be done as long as it's profitable. So only real question here is if people want that extra content. Which honestly is hard to answer at this point since we know nothing about size of possible expansion. But whole thread is going around wrong question.

It depends..if it is a full blown expansion then yes, I'd pay.
If it's not then no.
And by full blown i mean like WoW or Rift expansion. ( And I don't like WoW, so please no go back to WoW please. )
Will Makeb be a full blown expansion ? We'll have to wait and see what the plan on releasing, although 5 level increase does seem kind of small to be called an expansion.
We didn't start the Star Wars,They were already fightin' em,since George was writing them!!

EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark
Release date April 24, 2000

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EverQue...uins_of_Kunark

In terms of the game, The Ruins of Kunark had a very different visual feel compared to the original zones in EverQuest: the color palette was more vibrant and many of the models used for the monsters were more detailed. This detail was most evident in the Iksar, a new playable race of lizard people introduced with the expansion.[1] The Iksar had a number of racial advantages, including the ability to stay underwater for longer periods of time, additional regenerative powers, and an armor bonus. This was balanced by the fact that they were hated by all of the other races in the game and that there were very few places they could go without being attacked. They also could not wear plate armor.

The Kunark expansion also increased the maximum level a character could attain from 50 to 60, and introduced a substantial number of new and powerful monsters for characters above level 50 to fight.[2] The most notable of these was Veeshan's Peak, a zone populated by dragons that was, at its release, declared to be the hardest zone that would be put into EverQuest. In reality, the zone quickly was surpassed by other zones released in further expansions, and is in fact not used often by players.

Another notable and deep dungeon is Sebilis, the lair of the undead dragon Trakanon, which required players to level past the previous limit and obtain improved gear introduced in the expansion.

The Ruins of Kunark was also the focus of 'epic quests', or quests for powerful weapons for each character class, which were introduced between the Kunark and Velious expansions as a source of further high-end content.

The Kunark expansion was unique in its method of distribution. A player would order the expansion from Verant's online store, and it was then shipped directly to the player's home. Unforeseen shipping delays caused many players to miss the expansion's official opening date. Thereafter, most EverQuest expansions were either available in local stores, or downloaded directly from Verant, many weeks before the official opening date.

Yeah Kunark and SoV are pretty much my gold standard as to what an "expansion" actually is.

I honestly think SWTOR could do with a SoV style expansion right now, rather than silly level raising at this point.
Real Star Wars space combat please, not Star Wars Fox! Maybe some PvP and flight too?
