ground soldiers in ships

is it just me but when a ship gets destroyed, the number of ground troop casualties would be incredibly high, but some how that never seems to affect the republic, considerably when massive fleets are destryed

If I remember correctly from the essels, they take thranta looking ships and significantly reduce the armament to free up space to use as army transports to take armies to campaigns. These ships stay out of fleet battles and general show up once the space is clear to let them safely enter orbit to distribute their troops onto the planet. Or they wait for a signal from the main fleet engaging the enemy before jumping in so that the main fleet is distracted. Chances are, on the actual capital ships and smaller crusiers they do not have ground troops, but marines which repel boarding actions.
