First off, that's just for the UK, not global.

Secondly, I'm not sure how you get "mediocre" out of "the second largest non-World of Warcraft PC MMO launch in UK history".

judging from the fact that GW2 is basically running itself off box sales alone, i presume maintaining servers arent as expensive as you think.
I don't understand what your point is. Never do I mention the costs of servers or a sub being an issue. I'm saying Bioware needs to start producing content that is worth our time or players will play Gw2 or MoP or some other game instead. That is exactly what over 50% of the original players of swtor have already done. The $15 per month is immaterial.

A lot of people are going to play those games regardless of any content updates at this MMO. It's the nature of MMO players these days. Largely transient game hopping from MMO to MMO, and back again, over and over and over. If a new MMO enters the mix, it gets the launch frenzy and then enters the hopping rotation.

There is no brand loyalty in MMOs anymore (including WoW, which epitomizes sub/non-sub hopping in the industry), no matter what the MMO producer does. It is what it is.

like all mmos sales dip, player base level out, its normal, swtor isnt dying, as of may of this year swtor was between 400k and 900k.

games like EVE are at 360k.

we're doing just fine people.

The real cost to maintain servers in an MMO is developing, debugging and releasing new content. The reason GW2 works is because you will pay for new content with each expansion box they sell. They will fix bugs and power the servers and keep them live of course, but content in their model comes from expansion boxes. They will pay their ongoing expenses to develop new content from Gem sales mostly I believe. They have a lot of hooks in the game to entice you to buy and spend gems. Not just fluff stuff, bag slots, bank slots, character slots, etc... all require significant Gem buys. And yeah, you can obtain Gems in game in a number of ways, including gold for Gems, but th quantity you need for simple things like add a bag slot is very inflated. It's designed to suck cash out of wallets.

Yup ... yup ... yup ... This. Like any other market, the MMO market is now flooded which is going to thin any game's population. About the only game that will stay with multimillions of subscribers is WoW, and that's because it was a once in a generation lightning strike. Its population isn't what it was either, nor will it ever be. Just too many consumer options.
Can we please just have our pre-KotFE SWTOR MMORPG back?

You are in denial. Server mergers, layoffs (especially Stephen Reid's) and F2P are ipso facto proof that we are NOT doing fine. 90% of my 50+ member raiding guild (that got faction 1st HM Kephess kill, all of whom had multiple level 50's) have quit the game. My WoW guild has been around since BC and they are still raiding and paying subs. My lotro guild is long dead and that's the f2p model? Eve costs a fraction of what swtor did to make. The ROI isn't the same and that is how profitability is measured. I still play the game and will stay subbed at least until f2p drops.

I am trying to get Bioware and the community to see that f2p is not the answer. The problem is lack of content. F2p does not address the problem. Sub price was never the problem. Where is the content?

Talking to guys I know at Gamestop corporate it isn't doing doing that stellar sales wise here in the US either and Second largest is just spin it is behind SWTOR that despite being the first largest non wow title still wasn't huge numbers....and honestly Anet got the bulk of those sales in there pre-purcase to play bata sca...errr"offer."

You can spin it any way you like fact is GW2 didn't rule the world as predicted and didn't really even do better than SWTOR.

Often, Lotro is cited as an example of a game that succeeded under f2p. Really? How come no one from my lotro guild still plays that game and they were die hard Tolkien fans? Instead of a community, you get an endless stream of new players who all play for a few weeks and disappear without spending a dime. Remaining subscribers quit because of the annoying gating that DOES affect them even when Turbine said it wouldn't. EA/Bioware will try to monetize us beyond the sub, too. If you don't think so, you are naive.

Newsflash, there is a LOT of competition in the mmo space now. Much more than when lotro went f2p. Does anyone at Bioware know the saying, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"? Once the community sees what f2p really is, they will bail. I hope I'm wrong but when you've been burned before...

Finally, I'm so sick of the trumped out "40% of players say they quit because of sub" so they want f2p. Do you think we're stupid, Jeff Hickman? Our FRIENDS quit and told us why. They're not going to pay a sub for no content. If you can't figure that out, how do you have a job? At best you're clueless, at worst, you're a liar.

If you make the content, players will come. F2p is not the answer. It's also ***-backwards how it's being implemented. Give away the best content in the game and then try to charge for the mediocre end game. This game had great potential but it's downfall was mismanagement.
