It could simply mean that player ships will become visible in hangars (maybe even explorable) by other players.
Yes, I'm sure the hushed, secretive tone, the meticulous choice of words, and the stalwart refusal to elaborate further can all be explained away as Erikson's attempt to throw us off that most ambitious undertaking, the "ships-being-visible-in-hangars project".

Could always be a new and original addition to MMOs. Starship Runway, where players get to show off their meticulously customized starships and have them voted on by 3 impartial judges, Darth Malgus, HK-51, and our host, the one and only Kephess! Losers are instantly vaped while the winners gain fabulous prizes!

I can't actually come up with a good theory of what else it could mean, so you're definitely right in saying it seems to be the most logical conclusion. I don't want to raise my hopes too high in case its not, but I'm still hoping for it.

Your idea sounds better than 99% of the garbage Bioware has passed for content since the game's release, so here's hoping!

At this point it would be good if they just came out and gave us a rough idea of what it is they are planning. Expectations seem to be running high, will it be PvP, or co-op, or a space section in an operation? Will it be X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter 2? Or something like Elite? Will you be able to buy a different ship or use a ship from your legacy?

I doubt it will be any of those, but until we get a bit of info those are going to continue to be the lofty expectations of this.

Because Bioware has shown so much of "their ambitious undertaking" to date.

I think they may have originally meant the new super secret space project to be something much more, but I have my suspicions that it has been put way, way on the back burner now.

But hopefully you are right, and it is more than just that. Forgive me if I have lost some faith in Bioware of late though.

Scroll down to podcast 72. The relevant part starts at -5:50. Below is the transcript. I underlined the really, REALLY relevant part so that its underlying meaning doesn't escape you, as it did the (clueless) interviewer.

INTERVIEWER: "Also, I've got a couple of other little quick questions: have you guys ever considered… allowing it so that you can change the appearance of your starship, so that way it kind of stands out, and it's a little unique and different from every other starship that's in the game."

ERIKSON: "Definitely. Ship customization is a passion for a lot of people. Uhm, there is a TON of things at work for space…entirely, I will say: I don't know why I want to turn my ship different colors if nobody else can see it."

Yeah, I'm not saying they haven't said they wouldn't like to do many things with space (they have - they've said a lot from Guild ships to customisation).

But they've said nothing definate at all (except that the SSSP would be a "whole different pixel space").

After 9 months from the SSSPs first mention I can only see two possiblities for the keeping the current information black out.

1. It's ambitious and possibly huge, but is still in the very earliest of stages (i.e. it's been on the go for 9 months, but only barely) and isn't likely to appear till late 2013 or 2014 at the earliest.

or

2. It's something that is seriously not that ambitious and now they've realised it's been hyped beyond all reason and revealing what it will be is going to be a huge disapointment.

I suppose 3. is that it is just Bioware being obsessively secret for no real reason (in a very corporate way), but look at how early they revealed fairly minor stuff like HK-51 etc., you'd have thought if they had something great up their sleeve for space their PR department would have been using it months ago to try to retain subscriptions. I mean look at RvR and how that was spun to attract PvPer pre-release.
Real Star Wars space combat please, not Star Wars Fox! Maybe some PvP and flight too?

Five Great Reasons For Keeping Details of the Secret Space Project... Secret...

1.) The design is still in flux and elements of the expansion are still changing.

2.) They know what they want to do, but aren't exactly sure of the feasibility of the entire plan.

3.) Competing Games

4.) Competing Games

5.) Competing Games

Again, this isn't 2003, as so many people are fond of stating.

This new space project has at least these competitors to worry about trying to either snake the entire idea or trying to incorporate some of their elements into their own game.

-- Project Titan
-- EVE
-- Star Trek Online
-- Universe Online
-- Others: http://www.spacemmorpg.com/

They have plenty of reasons for keeping these details close to home. I'm sorry if you disagree, but it is what it is. You cannot deny that there are other MMORPGs with a core space component who would like to know what SWTOR is up to.

1) and 2) are basically my 1).

3), 4) and 5)....... well maybe, but Titan they haven't even said isn't a fantasy MMORPG yet have they?

STO already has more Space than SWTOR.
EvE is a different beast.
Never heard of Universe.

But I can't see what they can do that would be so innovative, JTL with story or multiplayer Freelancer (with SW skin) would be amazing enough.

Yes I understand that its "secret" But they haven't revealed any more information on it since they announced the project , you'd think they'd at least tell us what we looking towards when it does finally come, there is no reason to be secret tbh bio need all the feedback they can get before its released so they release something we actually want in the game.

Indeed. I'm one of the last people that would be critical of SW:TOR, but we have mountains and mountains of allusions and promised content, with very little material to show for it. Hints are hinted at, and rehinted at when they think we've forgotten about the hints from months ago.
