EA COO (Peter Moore) maintains confidence in BioWare

From Massively:

Quote:
Some decry that EA has lost confidence in BioWare, citing the studio's difficult year that included the less-than-hoped-for performance of Star Wars: The Old Republic and that the move to free-to-play later this fall is a sign of failure. EA COO Peter Moore, however, directly refutes that saying, "They're doing great."

Moore continued by giving EA's take on why SWTOR didn't do as well as expected, explaining that the world of gaming changed between the time that project started and now -- a shift from subscription-based to F2P. He then pointed out that changing business models was directly related to the desires of the player base stating, "We do exit interviews. When people say I'm churning out, I'm going to step away for a while, we ask them why. Forty percent of people said, I just don't want to pay $15 a month. I love the game, but I'm just not into the subscription business."

EA President Frank Gibeau first revealed the 40% sub-related departure rate in a previous investor call.

To be expected.

People often lay off large portions of teams that they have confidence in.

Right?

Lol, "they're doing great!"? Wow, what a bunch of ignorance. If all he thinks that it was the subscription model that put a dent in this game, you've got to be s**tting me.

This game is hemorrhaging players very fast for so many reasons—just look at the Unsubscriber's Thread. I, for one, blame that this was going to be an on-rails, story-driven and themepark MMO with absolutely no sandbox features and boring (and grindy) side-quests. Pretty much the only reason to stay and play is because of the 8 stories, but leveling up and alting is grueling for many of us and since it's tedious many players may not even make it past 2 stories (like I have). Not everyone wanted to experience the "Story Pillar", and was looking for more difficult, rewarding PvE content or more diverse, and ever-changing PvP whether it was instanced or Open World.

I came here for the PvP and I'm highly dissatisfied with all of the CC and stuns that are put into some of the classes and are basically a requirement to live. EA didn't learn from WAR, and too much CC and stuns has given this game the moniker, CC Wars: The Stun Republic. Even the Resolve System here needs a check, and EAWare can't even properly balance classes. Sages/Sorcs got burned to the bone, and PTs and Marauders still need their nerfs.

I'm sorry, but this game's subscription-based model was not the reason it "failed to live up to its hype". Again, that's a bunch of pure ignorance and it clearly is shown if you go to the Unsubscriber's Thread.

One would hope the COO of a company understands the products that company produces. At least the value of those products.

If said COO does not understand that, then either he shouldn't be the COO or the product isn't core enough to the business and should be discontinued or forked off to someone who does.

I find it funny that they noticed the market charging towards F2P when subs started sinking dramatically. And blame it on the fact that when they started developing the game subs were all the rage. So did they just shut their office doors and draw the curtains and not look at the market for the 4-6 (not entirely sure) years it was in development.

I'm sure that if the subscription cost for mmo's rose to £20 p/m they would have noticed.

PVP is a really minor thing, LOTRO is one of the more sucessful MMOs out there and it's approuch to PVP basicly amounts to "go sit in your box" as for a lack of sandbox features if you expected this to be SWG 2.0 it's not BW's fault.

What do people expect him to say? the game is horrible and the people we hired to work on it dont know what they are doing? We had a choice to either fix the game and try to get people back or go f2p and scrape as much money as we can out of it until it finaly isnt making money anymore?

I hope they fix the game and it does well, but going f2p hasnt assured me that will happen, and the total lack of content updates and much needed improvements to bring the game up to par with current mmo functionality make it look like they still do not have a competant team running the game.

In short, words from a EA exec mean nothing, when i start seeing content and improvements ill believe this game has a chance.

If PvP is a minor thing, then why do we have PvP servers? Why do we have WZs? Why is there Open World PvP? I have to say the PvP'ers can give their input just as much as the RP players or PvE players.

I don't care what LotRO offers in terms of PvP cause I don't play it, and just because this is SWTOR. I remember the devs talking about how combat and PvP would get just as much as the love as PvE would. Now look: EAWare can't even manage to balance the classes as much as possible (having minor "balancing issues" is okay) and they haven't learned from WAR.

The PvP here has earned this game the moniker, CC Wars: The Stun Republic.

Btw, I didn't expect this game to be SWG 2.0. Never did. I'm a huge SW fan but never got the chance to play it, sadly. I just expected a few sandbox elements, but since there is none I do feel for the RP communities.

First sensible post in this thread, IMO.
When you find yourself surrounded by hostile Clowns... always go for the "Juggler" first.

I dunno how sensible that post is if he expected me to think this game was going to be SWG 2.0.
